A tech support person helps computer users solve technical problems and answer questions about hardware or software. Support may be provided in person, over the phone, or electronically.
What does a tech support person do?
The work commonly starts with understanding what is going wrong: the support person asks the user about the issue, checks relevant manuals or guidance, and uses diagnostic steps to identify a cause. Depending on the problem and the role, they may explain how to use software or equipment, install programs, set up devices, or make minor repairs.

Common tasks can include:
- Listening to users describe technical questions or problems.
- Diagnosing computer, software, or hardware issues.
- Explaining or demonstrating how to use a system or application.
- Installing software and setting up equipment.
- Making minor repairs and documenting problems and the steps taken to address them.
- Referring major or unresolved hardware and software issues to vendors or other technicians.
These are examples, not a checklist every person with a tech support title must perform. The employer and the particular role determine the scope.

Computer user support is centered on helping people with their computer and software questions or problems. Computer network support is a separate occupational area focused on networks. Employers may define responsibilities differently, so check the specific job description rather than assuming that similar titles are interchangeable.
