To judge a mobile game, streaming service, or other entertainment app, look beyond whether it uses an encrypted connection. OWASP’s Mobile Application Security Verification Standard (MASVS) offers a broader way to describe and assess app security, covering device data, account access, software maintenance, privacy, and more. It is a framework—not proof that any particular app has been independently tested or is safe.
What OWASP MASVS tells you—and what it does not
OWASP presents MASVS as a standard to help developers build secure mobile apps and testers assess them. It applies to Android and iOS and to consumer and enterprise apps. Its companion Mobile Application Security Testing Guide (MASTG) provides testing processes and cases that can be used alongside the standard. OWASP MASVS and the MASTG are useful reference points for understanding what security work can cover.

MASVS is not a government regulation, and the existence of the standard does not mean an app follows it. A claim that a service is “MASVS certified” needs separate, service-specific evidence; the framework itself does not establish that status. Security depends on how an app is implemented, tested, and maintained.
Eight areas that shape mobile app security
MASVS divides mobile security into control groups. Together, they show why a secure connection alone is not a complete security assessment.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Storage: How sensitive information saved on the device is protected.
- Cryptography: How cryptographic functions protect sensitive information.
- Authentication and authorization: How the app verifies identity and controls access to accounts and features.
- Network: How the app secures communication with remote systems.
- Platform: How the app interacts safely with the operating system and other installed apps.
- Code: How securely the app is written and whether it is kept current.
- Resilience: How the app resists reverse engineering and tampering.
- Privacy: How the app protects users’ privacy.
For a consumer, these are useful lenses for questions about an app. They are not a scorecard that can establish an unnamed service’s practices without evidence. OWASP’s MASVS overview describes the standard’s scope; MASTG explains testing approaches.
Practical questions to ask about an entertainment app
Account access and recovery
Check whether the service offers sensible account-protection and recovery options. Consider whether it protects login sessions, gives you a way to sign out remotely, and asks you to authenticate again before sensitive account or payment changes. These are questions about capabilities to look for; they do not establish that a particular app implements them.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Information saved on your phone
Ask whether the app needs the personal information and device permissions it requests, and review what it says it collects. Sensitive information can be exposed if it is retained carelessly in logs, caches, screenshots, backups, or other shared areas of a device. Limit optional information where the service allows it, and consider whether each permission makes sense for the app’s features.

For traffic between an app and its online services, ask whether it uses HTTPS and protects sensitive information in transit. An encrypted connection is important, but it addresses only network communication—not local storage, account controls, privacy, or the other MASVS areas.

Updates and third-party components
Developers need to maintain both the app and its third-party libraries. As a user, install app updates and keep your phone’s operating system updated. An update policy is one useful factor to consider, but the availability of an update alone does not demonstrate that every security issue has been addressed.
Privacy and permissions
Read the service’s privacy disclosures and review the permissions requested by the app. Where possible, restrict optional data collection and permissions you do not need. A privacy notice is a source of information about the provider’s stated practices, not an independent verification of how the app behaves.

- HARDWARE 2FA AND MFA: FIDO Alliance Certified FIDO2 v2.1 with CTAP2 plus legacy U2F and CTAP1 for strong two-factor login and passwordless sign-in on services that support security keys
- BUILDING ACCESS ON ONE CARD: MIFARE DESFire EV2 4K applet with AES encryption adds office door and physical access control alongside digital authentication
- CERTIFIED SECURE ELEMENT: An NXP Common Criteria EAL6+ certified secure controller and Java Card platform protects your keys on a tamper-resistant chip
- DUAL INTERFACE SMART CARD: Contactless NFC ISO 14443 plus ISO 7816 contact reader support in an ISO 7810 ID-1 format that is passive and needs no battery
- SWISS ENGINEERED DESIGN: Built by Cryptnox as a single card for authentication and access control and backed by a 2 year warranty
OWASP’s Mobile Application Security Cheat Sheet recommends practices including secure API communication, avoiding hard-coded credentials, secure token storage, session timeouts and remote logout, reauthentication for sensitive operations, encryption at rest and in transit, HTTPS, updated third-party libraries, and minimizing personally identifiable information. These developer-oriented recommendations can help you frame questions; they do not show how a specific app has implemented its controls.
How to interpret security claims
Distinguish between a stated policy, a design recommendation, and evidence of an assessment. A provider’s statement about its own security practices is not the same as a report showing that a defined set of controls was independently tested. If a service claims to follow MASVS or to have undergone testing, look for specific evidence about the service, the scope of the assessment, and who performed it. Without that evidence, do not treat the claim as proof of certification or safety.
NIST SP 800-163 Rev. 1 is a government publication about vetting mobile application security. It can provide background on app vetting, but it is an older publication and should not be presented as the latest universal checklist for consumers. For a general mobile-app security framework and testing guidance, MASVS and MASTG are the more directly relevant references here: NIST SP 800-163 Rev. 1.
