The bill depends first on how the stream is built, then on how long its channel runs, how much video each viewer receives, and whether you record and retain the broadcast. Separate those meters before comparing providers: a quiet always-on channel can be dominated by fixed channel or encoding charges, while a large audience can make delivery the biggest cost.
Start with the streaming architecture
“Cloud hosting” can mean different systems with different billing meters. A self-managed pipeline assembles cloud encoding, packaging and a CDN; a managed live-video API bundles some operational work but bills for configured channel and output time; an integrated video platform may bill by viewer-minutes and stored-video minutes. They are not interchangeable feature-for-feature, so compare the cost of the same workload and required capabilities.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Self-managed pipeline: You choose and configure individual services, such as AWS MediaLive for input and outputs, MediaPackage for ingest and packaging/origination, and CloudFront for delivery. Costs appear across separate service lines.
- Managed live API: The provider manages more of the live workflow, but channel duration, resolution, codec and distribution outputs can still create distinct charges.
- Integrated video platform: A platform may combine encoding and delivery into a simpler usage meter. Check what the meter includes, and whether storage or recording is billed separately.
For any architecture, build a monthly estimate from the same workload assumptions: input and channel hours, each output rendition and codec, packaging or origin, viewer delivery, recordings and retention, distribution endpoints, and any ancillary monitoring, logs or player/backend compute. Add applicable taxes, support, discounts and minimums only for the account and region being modeled.
Separate channel runtime from audience delivery
A 24/7 channel runs continuously; its viewers do not necessarily watch continuously. That distinction matters. Channel time, encoding or an active endpoint may be billed even when nobody is watching, while audience delivery grows with viewing. Recording can add storage costs even during a no-viewer period.

In a per-GB delivery model, a useful first approximation is:
Delivered data (MB) ≈ average delivered bitrate (Mbps) × concurrent viewers × seconds watched ÷ 8.

In an adaptive-bitrate stream, viewers may receive different renditions, so use a realistic average delivered bitrate for the rendition mix. Keep a separate conservative case using higher bitrates. Match decimal or binary units to the provider calculator; add protocol overhead only if the model accounts for it.

Delivery can dominate at scale, but it is not safe to assume it always will. AWS’s examples below show distribution dominating their modeled audience cases; a low-viewer, always-on channel may instead be driven by fixed channel, encoding or platform costs.
What provider pricing meters actually measure
AWS: itemized encoding, packaging and CDN delivery
AWS’s documented Live Streaming on AWS example uses MediaLive, MediaPackage and CloudFront. Each can contribute a separate line item. In its 1,000-viewer, one-hour SD 540p example, CloudFront distribution accounts for $67.24 of the $69.74 modeled total in US East (N. Virginia). AWS assumes MediaPackage serves 1% of traffic to CloudFront/viewers and models a 99% CDN cache-hit ratio. That is an attribution example for that configuration, not a guaranteed split for other pipelines. AWS states that users are responsible for the costs of the services used by the solution. See AWS’s deployment and cost examples.
AWS’s examples assume viewers consume the highest bitrate, making them conservative estimates under those assumptions; the guide notes QVBR and variable video complexity may reduce bandwidth costs by 10–50% relative to its estimate, depending on content and configuration. AWS also describes pay-as-you-go pricing, tiered rates for some services, free data transfer in, and Savings Plans commitments for eligible compute and machine-learning usage. Eligibility and rates vary by service and geography; a one- or three-year commitment can reduce unit rates but may cost more if demand falls below the commitment. Check AWS product pricing for the services and region you actually use.

Cloudflare Stream: delivered minutes and stored minutes
Cloudflare Stream uses two usage dimensions for live and on-demand video: delivered video minutes and stored video minutes. Its pricing page lists delivery at $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered and storage capacity at $5 per month per 1,000 minutes. Ingress and encoding are listed as free, with bandwidth included in delivery and no additional egress fee. These are the rates displayed on Cloudflare’s page, last updated September 8, 2026; confirm current terms before budgeting. The page also explains that segment requests and some preloading or buffering count toward delivery, while playback served from a client/browser cache is not billable as delivery. See Cloudflare Stream pricing.
At the listed delivery rate, Cloudflare’s example of two people each watching a 30-minute broadcast totals 60 delivered minutes, or $0.06. A live broadcast with no viewers has no delivered-minute charge, but recording it adds stored minutes. Storage is based on video duration rather than file size, and reaching the storage quota can prevent new uploads or live streams.
Google Cloud Live Stream API: channel, output and endpoint time
Google bills the Live Stream API on demand for live encoding and streaming. Active channel duration is billed hourly, with a ten-minute minimum and rounding up to the nearest minute thereafter; a channel can remain active without an input stream. Output cost depends on resolution and codec. SRT/RTMP distribution outputs add output charges while the channel is active, plus an hourly endpoint fee from distribution start until the endpoint is stopped. Google says the API has no free usage tier. Calculate the exact configuration and region using Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.

Provider examples: useful estimates, not monthly averages
AWS labels its deployment figures estimates, says prices are subject to change and notes that its examples are likely higher than actual costs. The following amounts are AWS’s current examples accessed in 2026, all under the specifically stated US East (N. Virginia) assumptions, standard rates without free-tier use or discounts, highest-bitrate viewing, and a 99% CDN cache-hit ratio. They are not market averages or quotes.
| AWS modeled workload | Encoding and packaging | Distribution | Total | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approximately 100 viewers, 200 live hours per month, HD 1080p | $904.69 | $2,934 | $3,838.69 | US East (N. Virginia); standard rates, no free tier or discounts; highest bitrate; 99% cache-hit ratio. |
| Approximately 1,000 viewers, one-hour event, SD 540p | $2.50 | $67.24 for 791 GB | $69.74 | US East (N. Virginia); standard rates, no free tier or discounts; highest bitrate; 99% cache-hit ratio. |
| Approximately 10,000 viewers, one-hour event, HD 1080p | $13.04 | $1,492.56 for 18,017 GB | $1,505.60 | US East (N. Virginia); standard rates, no free tier or discounts; highest bitrate; 99% cache-hit ratio. Illustrative upper estimate under the guide’s assumptions. |
The two one-hour events should not be multiplied into a monthly estimate without revisiting concurrent viewers, hours watched, bitrate mix, geography and cache behavior. The 100-viewer figure is a particular 200-hour monthly scenario, not the cost of every always-on channel. See the AWS example assumptions.
Reduce costs without breaking the stream
- Measure before changing configuration. Export bills and usage by service, region, channel and delivery path. Separate fixed channel time from audience-scaled consumption. Use provider dashboards and budget alerts to surface unexpected spend; alerts help identify overruns but are not a hard spending cap.
- Model the audience that actually watches. Estimate average concurrency and viewing hours, then calculate delivery for the likely rendition mix. Keep a separate high-bitrate case for planning rather than treating peak audience or follower count as a typical month.
- Right-size outputs and encoding. Keep only the renditions and codecs viewers need. Test settings on representative content and preserve acceptable picture quality and reliability. AWS says QVBR and variable video complexity can reduce output bandwidth 10–50% compared with its example estimate, but the result depends on content and configuration.
- Verify caching and origin behavior. Cacheability depends on protocol, whether media is segmented, and correct configuration. Cloudflare’s general guidance recommends suitable longer TTLs and Cache-Control headers, plus tiered caching where applicable, to reduce origin pulls. It also recommends suitable cache headers on Stream embed pages to reduce repeated delivery minutes. Confirm actual cache-hit and billing behavior before forecasting savings. See Cloudflare cost-optimization guidance.
- Set a deliberate recording-retention policy. Keep recordings only when they serve a defined purpose and for a defined period. On Cloudflare Stream, live recordings count toward stored minutes, which are duration-based. If recordings go to object storage instead, include request and retrieval charges as well as storage; consult Cloudflare R2 pricing for its current terms.
- Compare whole architectures on one workload. Hold resolution, codec, average bitrate, viewers, runtime, audience geography, retention and reliability needs constant. Compare the estimated bill and required features, not a single line item or a claim such as “free ingress.” Include engineering and operational effort as decision factors, clearly separated from provider charges.
- Reconcile the estimate against each invoice. Compare modeled and actual usage every billing period. Revisit the assumptions when audience, encoding, cache hit, region or retention changes.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is specifically to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to assembling and maintaining a cloud pipeline: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for plan details, then start your free day.
