To underline typed text in Samsung Notes, select the word or passage, then tap the underlined “U” in the formatting toolbar. If it is not visible, swipe the toolbar horizontally to reveal more controls. Recent Samsung Community replies describe this interface, though Samsung’s official support pages reviewed here do not publish a step-by-step underline procedure, and the toolbar can vary by app and software version.
Underline text in Samsung Notes
- Select the text. Open the note, then touch and hold a typed word and drag across the passage you want to format. Check that the text is highlighted before continuing.
- Find the underline control. Look for an underlined “U” in the formatting toolbar. If it is not in view, swipe the toolbar horizontally to reveal additional controls. A Samsung Community contributor responding to a Galaxy S24 question in October 2026 said the feature remained available by sliding the toolbar to the left; a July 2026 Galaxy S23+ discussion reported a similar way to find it. These are community-reported instructions, not an official Samsung procedure.
- Apply the formatting. Tap the underlined “U” while the text remains selected. The selected typed text should appear underlined.
If your toolbar looks different, check that Samsung Notes is current and consider that available controls and their layout may differ across devices and app versions. The reports cited above do not establish one path for every release. They describe an on-screen Notes control; they do not indicate that an S Pen or other accessory is required.

An underline added with the Notes formatting toolbar is a style applied to selected typed text. If you meant to emphasize a word or passage, use the selected-text procedure above.

Keyboard correction marks
An underline that appears as you type may instead be a keyboard suggestion or text-correction cue, rather than formatting saved in the note. Samsung’s keyboard guidance describes suggestion and correction features and notes that screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider, software version, and phone model: Samsung Keyboard settings and text suggestions. Related controls are under Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings, though labels and available options can differ. Blue links in Samsung Notes
Samsung Notes can automatically recognize items such as URLs, email addresses, numbers, dates, times, and addresses as blue hyperlinks. To change that behavior, open Samsung Notes, open the menu, choose Settings, and turn off “Show links in notes.” This affects automatic link recognition, not ordinary underline formatting: Samsung Notes features and settings.
