Once a contact is unblocked, they may be able to send you messages, place Signal calls, and interact with you again depending on your privacy settings, whether they still have your number, and whether either of you has changed accounts or devices.
The exact steps vary slightly between Android and iPhone, while Signal Desktop has more limited contact-management options. It also helps to know what unblocking does not restore: previously blocked messages are not delivered retroactively, deleted chats do not reappear automatically, and Signal does not notify the other person that you unblocked them.

If someone still cannot message or call you after being unblocked, the issue may involve registration, phone number changes, blocked group settings, app permissions, network problems, or privacy controls rather than the block list itself. Understanding these limits can help you unblock safely while keeping control over who can reach you.
What Happens When You Unblock Someone on Signal
When you unblock someone on Signal, you remove the restriction that prevented that person from contacting you through the app. After unblocking, they can send you Signal messages, place Signal voice or video calls, and see any profile information you normally share with them under your privacy settings. Unblocking does not send them an alert, so the person will not receive a notification saying they have been unblocked.

Unblocking does not restore messages or calls that were blocked while the contact was on your blocked list. If they tried to message you during that time, those messages were not delivered to your chat after you unblock them. Signal does not keep a hidden queue of blocked messages for later delivery. The same applies to missed calls from the blocked period: they will not appear as newly available calls once the block is removed.
What changes after unblocking
- Messages can be delivered again: New messages sent after unblocking can reach you, assuming both accounts are active and connected to the internet.
- Calls can come through: The contact can make Signal voice and video calls to you again.
- Your profile may be visible: They may be able to see your Signal name, photo, and other profile details depending on your privacy settings.
- Read receipts and typing indicators follow your settings: If you have these enabled, the unblocked person may see them just like other contacts can.
- No automatic chat reset occurs: Existing chat history on your device remains as it was unless you deleted it separately.
There are also limits to what unblocking can do. If you deleted the conversation, unblocking will not bring the chat thread back with its previous messages unless they still exist on another linked device or in a valid local backup where supported. If the person deleted their Signal account, changed numbers, or no longer has Signal installed, unblocking them will not make them reachable. In that case, you may need to start a new chat with their current Signal number or wait until they register again.
Unblocking is separate from other privacy controls in Signal. For example, if you have changed who can find you by phone number, who can see your profile photo, or whether read receipts are enabled, those settings still apply after the contact is unblocked. If you are unblocking someone only temporarily, review these settings first so you know what information they may be able to see once communication is allowed again.

How to Unblock Someone on Signal for Android
On Android, Signal keeps blocked people in a dedicated privacy list, so you do not need to find an old chat thread to unblock someone. The steps below apply to the current Signal Android layout, though menu names can vary slightly depending on your app version and device.
- Open the Signal app on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile icon or initials in the top-left corner to open Signal settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Scroll to the Blocked section and tap Blocked users or Blocked.
- Find the person or phone number you want to unblock.
- Tap the contact, then choose Unblock.
- Confirm if Signal asks you to approve the change.
After you unblock the person, Signal allows new messages and calls from that contact to reach you again. Unblocking does not automatically send them a notification, add them back to your phone contacts, restore deleted messages, or rejoin any groups you left. If the previous conversation still exists, you may be able to open it and continue from there, but messages sent while the person was blocked will not be delivered retroactively.
Alternative method from a chat
If you still have the conversation visible in Signal, you may also be able to unblock the person directly from the chat. Open the conversation, look for a banner or prompt saying the contact is blocked, and tap Unblock. If no banner appears, tap the contact name or number at the top of the chat to open chat settings, then check whether an Unblock option is available.
If you cannot find the blocked contact, first make sure you are checking Signal’s own blocked list rather than Android’s system-level blocked numbers list. Signal blocking and phone-call blocking are separate controls. Also update Signal from the Google Play Store, fully close and reopen the app, and confirm that the contact is still using the same phone number or Signal account you originally blocked.

On iPhone, Signal manages blocked contacts inside the app’s privacy settings. Unblocking someone restores their ability to send you Signal messages and place Signal calls, but it does not automatically notify them that they have been unblocked. The change applies to your Signal account on that phone and should sync with your linked Signal Desktop after the app updates its settings.

- Find the person or phone number you want to unblock.
- Swipe left on the contact and tap Unblock, or tap the contact and choose Unblock if that option appears.
- Confirm the action if Signal asks you to do so.
If the person is saved in your iPhone contacts, they may appear by name. If they are not saved, you may only see a phone number. In some cases, a blocked person may also appear through a Signal username or profile details if your version of Signal supports those features. Make sure you are unblocking the correct entry, especially if you have mulle contacts with similar names or old numbers.
You can also unblock someone from an existing conversation if the chat is still visible. Open the chat, tap the contact name or number at the top, then look for an Unblock option on the conversation details screen. This is useful when you do not want to search through the full blocked list. If the conversation was deleted, use the privacy settings method instead.
If you do not see the blocked contact
- Update Signal: Open the App Store, search for Signal, and install any available update.
- Check the right account: Confirm Signal is registered with the phone number you used when blocking the person.
- Restart the app: Fully close Signal from the app switcher, then reopen it and check the blocked list again.
- Check iOS contacts: If you blocked the person at the iPhone system level, go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Blocked Contacts or Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts, depending on your iOS version.
Unblocking in Signal only affects Signal communication. If the person is also blocked in iOS Phone, Messages, FaceTime, or another app, they may still be unable to reach you outside Signal. Likewise, unblocking does not restore messages they sent while blocked; those messages are not delivered retroactively. After unblocking, new messages and calls can come through, subject to your notification settings, internet connection, registration status, and any remaining blocks on either side.
Can You Unblock Someone on Signal Desktop?
Signal Desktop is useful for sending messages from a computer, but it does not provide the same full account-management controls as the mobile app. In most cases, you cannot manage your complete blocked contacts list directly from Signal Desktop. Blocking and unblocking are tied to your Signal account, and the primary place to change those settings is the Signal app on your Android phone or iPhone.
If you blocked someone on Signal, use your phone to unblock them. Once the contact is unblocked on mobile, the change should apply to your Signal account and affect conversations across linked devices, including Signal Desktop. That means the person should be able to send you Signal messages and place Signal calls again, and their messages should appear on your desktop app once syncing and delivery are working normally.
What you can do from Signal Desktop
Signal Desktop may let you interact with an existing chat, delete a conversation, archive a chat, or manage local conversation visibility, depending on your version and platform. These actions are different from unblocking. Deleting a conversation on desktop does not unblock the person. Archiving a chat does not unblock them either. If a blocked contact’s conversation is still visible on desktop, opening it does not necessarily mean they are unblocked.
- To unblock the contact: use Signal on Android or iPhone and remove them from the blocked list.
- To refresh desktop: keep Signal Desktop open and connected to the internet after unblocking on your phone.
- To avoid confusion: check the mobile blocked list rather than relying on whether a chat appears on desktop.
How to make the desktop app reflect the change
After unblocking someone on your phone, give Signal Desktop a moment to sync. Make sure both your phone and computer are online. If the contact still appears blocked or messages do not arrive on desktop, quit Signal Desktop completely and reopen it. You can also restart your phone, then open Signal mobile first before opening the desktop app again.

If Signal Desktop has been offline for a long time, it may take longer to catch up. Linked devices do not always receive every historical event in the way your phone does, and Signal’s privacy design limits what can be recovered or replayed later. New messages sent after unblocking should be the clearest test. Ask the person to send a fresh message or place a new call after you have unblocked them on mobile.
| Action | Can it be done on Signal Desktop? | Where to do it instead |
|---|---|---|
| Unblock a contact | Usually no | Signal for Android or iPhone |
| Delete a conversation | Yes | Signal Desktop or mobile |
| Confirm the blocked list | No | Signal mobile privacy settings |
| Receive new messages after unblocking | Yes, after syncing | Signal Desktop and mobile |
If the desktop app still does not behave correctly after the contact is unblocked on your phone, check for a Signal Desktop update. An outdated desktop app can cause syncing or display problems. If needed, unlink and relink Signal Desktop from your phone, but remember that relinking may affect local desktop message history. The unblocking decision itself should still be managed from the mobile app, since your phone remains the main device for Signal account and privacy settings.
How to Confirm a Contact Has Been Unblocked
After unblocking someone on Signal, there is no special confirmation message sent to you or to the other person. Signal also does not show a public “unblocked” status in the chat. The most reliable way to confirm the change is to check your blocked list and then test whether normal conversation options are available again.
Check the blocked list again
Open Signal on your phone and return to the blocked users screen. On Android, go to Signal Settings > Privacy > Blocked. On iPhone, go to Signal Settings > Privacy > Blocked. If the person’s name, phone number, or Signal username no longer appears there, they have been removed from your blocked list.
Recommended Free Tools
If the contact still appears in the blocked list, tap their entry and choose the unblock option again. In some cases, you may need to close and reopen Signal before the list refreshes. If you use Signal on mulle linked devices, check from your primary phone first, because blocking and unblocking controls are managed from the mobile app rather than Signal Desktop.
Open the conversation and check available actions
Once a contact is unblocked, their chat should behave like a normal Signal conversation again. Open the conversation thread and look for the message composer, call buttons, and profile details. If you previously saw a blocked-contact notice or could not send a message, those restrictions should be gone.
- Message field: You should be able to type and send a new Signal message.
- Voice and video calls: The call icons should be available if the contact can be reached on Signal.
- Profile access: You should be able to view the conversation settings and contact details as usual.
- Blocked list: The person should no longer appear under blocked contacts.
You can also send a short message such as “Hi” to confirm that the chat is active again. A sent message with a single check mark means it has left your device and reached Signal’s service. Two check marks mean it has been delivered to the recipient’s device. If read receipts are enabled by both people, filled check marks indicate that the message has been read. Delivery indicators are useful, but they do not prove unblocking by themselves, because delivery can also be affected by the other person’s internet connection, device status, or Signal settings.

Ask the other person to test contact from their side
If you are in touch with the person through another channel, ask them to send you a Signal message or place a Signal call. After unblocking, their new messages and calls should be able to reach you. Messages they sent while blocked are not released later, so they may need to send a fresh message after you unblock them.

A person may appear under a saved contact name, phone number, or Signal username depending on how they are added. Also check whether you have blocked them in a Signal group context, blocked an old number, muted the chat, archived the conversation, or enabled settings that make incoming requests less visible. Unblocking restores the ability to communicate, but it does not automatically add the person to your address book, change your privacy settings, or recover messages that were blocked earlier.
Why Someone Still Can’t Message You After Unblocking
If you unblock someone on Signal and they still cannot send you messages or call you, the cause is usually not the unblock action itself. Signal’s block list change should take effect quickly on your phone, but delivery depends on both people’s app state, registration status, network connection, privacy settings, and whether either side has changed numbers or accounts.
Common causes to check first
- They are still blocked on another device setting: Signal’s block list is tied to your Signal account, but you should still confirm on your primary phone under Signal settings, not only from a chat screen.
- They blocked you too: If the other person blocked your number, your messages and calls may not reach them even after you unblock them.
- One of you changed phone numbers: Signal accounts are linked to phone numbers. If they are messaging an old number, or you restored Signal with a new number, they may need to start a new chat with your current Signal number.
- Their contact entry is outdated: If your number is saved incorrectly in their phone contacts, Signal may not match the conversation to your current account.
- Signal is not registered on one device: If either person uninstalled Signal, changed phones, or did not complete registration, messages may remain unsent or calls may fail.
- Network or background restrictions are interfering: Weak connectivity, battery saver modes, VPNs, firewalls, or disabled background data can delay Signal notifications and message delivery.
Ask the other person what they see when they try to contact you. A single check mark generally means the message was sent from their device but not delivered to yours. Two check marks mean it reached your device. If read receipts are enabled, filled check marks show that the message was read. Calls that ring but go unanswered are different from calls that fail immediately; failed calls often point to connectivity, registration, or app permission problems.
Troubleshooting steps
- Confirm the unblock on your phone: Open Signal settings, go to Privacy, then Blocked, and make sure their number is no longer listed.
- Restart Signal on both phones: Fully close and reopen the app. If needed, restart both devices.
- Update Signal: Both people should install the latest Signal version from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Start a fresh conversation: Delete or archive the old thread if necessary, then create a new chat using the contact’s current number.
- Check phone contact details: Make sure the number includes the correct country code and has no duplicate or outdated entries.
- Test with another Signal contact: If neither person can receive Signal messages from anyone, the issue is likely account, network, or device related rather than blocking.
- Review permissions: On iPhone and Android, allow Signal access to contacts, notifications, microphone, and cellular data. For calls, microphone permission is especially relevant.
If the person still cannot reach you, have them open Signal and search for your exact current number instead of relying on an old chat. You can also send them a new Signal message first; once they receive it, they can reply in that thread. If messages still do not deliver after both apps are updated and both accounts are registered, the safest next step is for each person to verify the correct number, disable restrictive VPN or firewall settings temporarily, and test again on a stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.

Privacy Tips Before Unblocking a Contact
Before you unblock someone on Signal, take a moment to think through what access you are restoring. Unblocking allows the person to send you Signal messages and place Signal voice or video calls again, but it does not restore old blocked messages that were never delivered. It also does not automatically add them back to your phone contacts or make you share more profile information than your current Signal privacy settings allow.
Check your profile visibility first. In Signal, your profile name and photo may be visible depending on how you have configured privacy and who has your number saved. If you do not want the person to see an updated profile photo, name, or other identifying details, adjust those settings before unblocking. On mobile, review Settings > Privacy and look for options related to your profile, phone number visibility, calls, read receipts, typing indicators, and stories.

Settings worth reviewing first
- Phone number privacy: Decide who can see your number and who can find you by it, where the feature is available in your version of Signal.
- Profile photo and name: Use a neutral photo or limited profile details if you do not want to reveal personal information.
- Read receipts: Turn them off if you do not want the person to know when you have read their messages.
- Typing indicators: Disable them if you prefer not to show when you are composing a reply.
- Calls: Consider enabling call relay if you want to reduce exposure of your IP address during Signal calls, though call quality may be affected.
- Stories: Review your story audience so the unblocked person does not automatically see updates you intended for a smaller group.
If the contact was blocked for harassment, scams, impersonation, or unwanted pressure, consider whether unblocking is necessary at all. You can keep them blocked, report abusive behavior, or ask a trusted person to handle communication through another channel. If you only need to receive one message, make a clear boundary before unblocking and be ready to block the person again if the conversation becomes unsafe or unwanted.
It is also worth checking shared groups. Blocking someone on Signal does not always remove every indirect connection you may have through group chats. If you and the person are in the same group, they may still see messages you send in that group, depending on Signal’s current group behavior and your app version. Review mutual groups, leave groups that feel unsafe, or ask a group admin to help manage the situation if needed.
Finally, update Signal before changing privacy-sensitive settings. Android and iPhone versions can differ slightly, and newer releases may include improved controls for phone number discovery, profile sharing, and call privacy. After updating, revisit your privacy settings, confirm your preferences, and then unblock the contact only if you are comfortable with the level of access they will regain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I receive the messages someone sent while they were blocked on Signal?
No. Signal does not deliver messages, calls, or message requests that were sent while the person was blocked. After you unblock them, they can contact you again, but they will need to send a new message or place a new call.
Can I unblock someone on Signal Desktop?
Signal Desktop does not provide the full contact blocking and unblocking controls available on Android and iPhone. To unblock someone, use the Signal mobile app on your linked phone. Once unblocked on your phone, the change should apply to your Signal account, including linked desktop sessions.
Will the other person know that I unblocked them?
Signal does not send a notification when you unblock someone. They may figure it out if their new messages start delivering or their calls go through again. Your profile photo, name, and other visibility settings still depend on your Signal privacy settings and whether they are in your contacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy can’t someone message or call me after I unblocked them?
Check that you unblocked the correct phone number or Signal username, especially if they changed numbers or you have duplicate contacts. Make sure neither of you has blocked the other, both apps are updated, and both devices have a working internet connection. If needed, restart Signal, refresh contacts, or ask them to start a new chat thread.
Does unblocking someone restore the old chat or deleted messages?
Unblocking a contact does not restore deleted chats, expired disappearing messages, or messages blocked from delivery. If the chat still exists on your phone, you can continue using it after unblocking. If you deleted the conversation, you will need to start a new chat or wait for the other person to send a new message.
Bottom Line
Unblocking someone on Signal is usually a quick trip to your blocked contacts list on Android or iPhone, while desktop users may need to manage the block from the linked phone depending on their setup. Once unblocked, the person can message or call you again, but past blocked messages will not be recovered and your privacy settings still control what they can see.
If they still cannot reach you, confirm they are unblocked on your phone, check that both of you are using the correct Signal number, update the app, and review notification, registration, or network issues. If problems continue, remove and re-add the chat or contact, relink desktop if needed, and contact Signal support as the next step.
