Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a website will not open, first find out whether the problem is the site, your browser, your connection, or an access rule. Check a few other sites, note the exact error, and then use the matching fix below. A VPN or DNS change cannot fix every kind of block—and may create a new problem.
Start by identifying what is failing
- Open two or three unrelated websites. If none load, troubleshoot the internet connection before focusing on one address.
- If possible, check another device on the same Wi-Fi. If it also cannot browse, the router, network, or sign-in requirements may be involved.
- Write down the exact browser message and the affected website address. Errors such as
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED,ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED,ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT, andERR_CONNECTION_RESETpoint to different kinds of failures, not necessarily an intentional block. Chrome explains thatERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVEDmeans the hostname does not exist or has a different IP address (Chrome Help: common error messages).
Windows users can also follow Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting when browsing fails across sites.

If Wi-Fi says connected but browsing does not work
Complete a captive-portal sign-in
Hotels, airports, schools, workplaces, and public hotspots may require a web sign-in or acceptance of terms before normal internet access begins. Open a basic website to prompt the portal, verify that you joined the network’s official Wi-Fi name, and complete its sign-in steps. If no sign-in page appears, ask the network operator or administrator whether access is pending approval.
A VPN or proxy may prevent the portal page from loading. Mozilla notes that some networks require sign-in before a VPN or proxy can connect (Mozilla Support: Captive portal detection). If permitted, temporarily disconnect the VPN or proxy, complete the portal sign-in, and reconnect afterward only if appropriate.

If only one website fails
- Try the address in another browser. If it works there, the first browser’s settings, stored site data, or an extension may be responsible.
- Temporarily disable relevant extensions such as content blockers, then reload. Re-enable them after the test, especially if they protect privacy or security.
- Try another network, such as mobile data, if you are allowed to use it. A site that works elsewhere may be affected by the current network’s filtering, DNS, or routing.
- Check whether a VPN or Apple Private Relay is affecting Safari access. Apple lists these as possible causes when a site will not load (Apple Support: If Safari doesn’t open a page).
- If the browser indicates the website itself has a problem, contact its owner or wait for service to return. Google likewise recommends contacting the site owner for some website-side errors (Chrome Help).
Do not bypass certificate warnings
A certificate warning, invalid-name message, or obsolete-security warning is not an ordinary access restriction. It can mean the site’s certificate or security configuration is wrong, or that the server uses outdated security. Do not ignore the warning, weaken browser security, or enter passwords or payment details through a page that triggers it. Try the correctly typed address and contact the site owner if the warning persists; some server-side cases require the owner to fix the configuration.
If a sign-in page is asking for extra verification
For Microsoft’s sign-in challenge specifically, its support guidance suggests leaving private browsing, temporarily disabling blockers, allowing cookies and JavaScript, disconnecting a VPN or proxy, trying another network, or using another browser. Microsoft notes that a shared network’s IP address may be flagged for unusual traffic (Microsoft account sign-in troubleshooting). These steps apply to that kind of account challenge; they are not a general solution for every blocked site.

If school or work blocks the website
A managed school or workplace device or network may use administrator-configured website rules. Google’s managed Chrome documentation describes URL blocklists and allowlists, and notes that an allowlist takes precedence over a blocklist (Google Chrome Enterprise: Allow or block access to websites). Ask the school or IT administrator to review the site or approve an exception for a legitimate need.

Some organizations also require an approved proxy and provide its server address or configuration script through IT. Do not change managed settings or try to evade the policy; that can violate organizational rules and may break access to other services.

Use DNS or network resets only when the symptoms fit
A DNS change may help when a hostname cannot be resolved, but it will not repair a site outage, a certificate problem, an account challenge, or an administrator’s block. Vendor-authored guidance from Outbyte discusses DNS changes, TCP/IP resets, clearing browser data, and checking proxy settings as possible connection fixes (Outbyte: connection-reset troubleshooting); treat these as general vendor suggestions, not proof that a reset is appropriate for your case.
On Windows, a network reset can require VPN software or virtual switches to be reinstalled or configured again. Microsoft documents that consequence in its network connection troubleshooting. Before changing DNS, resetting TCP/IP, or resetting a network, record current settings and check with IT if the device or connection is managed.
When a VPN or proxy is—and is not—the answer
A VPN or proxy is not a universal website unblocker. It can interfere with captive-portal sign-in, trigger an account-security challenge, or be disallowed by the destination service or network. Consider one only where permitted and where it addresses the actual issue, such as a legitimate privacy need. Review its privacy and data-handling terms, supported devices, performance, and the destination service’s rules. The available evidence does not establish a best VPN or a universal VPN recommendation.

If by “unblock” you mean getting an image of a public webpage rather than interactively accessing it, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot through one API request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a way to bypass a network restriction or sign in to a protected page. Its cleanup options accept cookie-consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with the response indicating the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server. Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing DNS unblock every website?
No. DNS changes can only help with some name-resolution problems; they do not fix outages, account restrictions, certificate warnings, or managed policies.
