The paragraph symbol, ¶, is useful in editing, proofreading, legal writing, academic work, layout s, and any situation where you need to mark or reference a paragraph clearly. Although it is not printed on most keyboards, Windows and Mac both offer quick ways to enter it with shortcuts, built-in character tools, or simple copy and paste.
The fastest method depends on your device, keyboard layout, and the app you are using. Some shortcuts work best in Microsoft Word or desktop apps, while character pickers and insert-symbol menus are often more reliable in browsers, web forms, and design tools.

What Is the Paragraph Symbol (¶)?
The paragraph symbol, ¶, is called a pilcrow. It is a typographic mark used to identify a paragraph break, paragraph reference, or paragraph-related formatting. In everyday writing, you may see it in legal documents, editing s, publishing workflows, style guides, word processors, and document review tools. Although most people do not type it often, it is useful when you need to point to a specific paragraph or show where one paragraph ends and another begins.

In word-processing apps such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and Apple Pages, the pilcrow is also associated with hidden formatting marks. When formatting marks are shown, a ¶ may appear at the end of each paragraph to reveal paragraph breaks, spacing, tabs, and layout behavior. These visible marks usually do not print; they are there to help you diagnose formatting problems, such as extra blank lines, unexpected page breaks, or inconsistent spacing between paragraphs.

The paragraph symbol can also be typed as a normal character. For example, legal and academic writing may use it to cite a paragraph number: See ¶ 12 or ¶¶ 4–6 for mulle paragraphs. Editors may use it in comments to refer to a paragraph that needs revision. In web forms, emails, spreadsheets, and plain-text notes, the symbol behaves like any other Unicode character, so it can be copied, pasted, searched, and included in labels or annotations.
It is helpful to distinguish the pilcrow from a few similar-looking marks. The section symbol, §, refers to sections rather than paragraphs and is common in statutes, contracts, and technical references. The return or enter symbol, ↵, indicates a line break or keyboard action, not a paragraph marker. The pilcrow ¶ specifically represents a paragraph, whether as a visible formatting mark or as a typed reference character.
How to Type the Paragraph Symbol on Windows
The fastest Windows method for typing the paragraph symbol is the numeric keypad shortcut. Place your cursor where you want the symbol to appear, hold down Alt, type 0182 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt. The result should be ¶. This works in many desktop apps, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, pad, and many text fields in browsers.

For the Alt code to work reliably, use the separate number pad on the right side of a full-size keyboard, not the number row above the letters. Make sure Num Lock is turned on before typing the digits. The full shortcut is:
- Alt + 0182 = ¶
If you use a compact laptop without a physical numeric keypad, the shortcut may not work in the usual way. Some laptops support an embedded numeric keypad through the Fn key, where certain letter keys double as numbers. In that case, you may need to enable Num Lock, hold Alt, and type 0182 using the embedded keypad keys. The exact key combination varies by laptop model, so if nothing appears, use one of the alternatives below instead.
Type ¶ in Microsoft Word on Windows
In Microsoft Word, the Alt code is usually the quickest option, but Word also has a built-in symbol picker. Go to Insert > Symbol > More Symbols, then look for the paragraph sign in the symbol list. You can also type 00B6 and then press Alt + X in Word to convert the Unicode value into ¶. This Unicode method is handy if you do not have a numeric keypad.
| Windows method | How to use it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Alt code | Hold Alt, type 0182 on the numeric keypad | Fast entry in desktop apps |
| Unicode in Word | Type 00B6, then press Alt + X | Microsoft Word without a number pad |
| Insert Symbol | Insert > Symbol > More Symbols | Occasional use in Office documents |
In web forms, email editors, and content management systems, Alt + 0182 may work if the browser or page accepts Windows Alt codes. If the shortcut is intercepted by the app, paste the symbol instead: ¶. For repeated use, consider adding it to a text expansion tool, a custom autocorrect entry in Word, or a pinned so you can insert it quickly without searching each time.

On a Mac, the fastest way to type the paragraph symbol is with a built-in keyboard shortcut. Place your cursor where you want the symbol to appear, then press Option + 7. This inserts ¶ in most text fields, including Pages, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, TextEdit, s, email apps, and many browser forms.
The shortcut uses the Option key, sometimes labeled Alt on certain Mac keyboards. You do not need to turn on any special setting, and you do not need the numeric keypad. For example, if you are editing a legal draft, proofreading a manuscript, or marking paragraph references in a style guide, you can type text such as See ¶ 12 for the revised clause by pressing Option + 7 where the symbol should appear.
Mac shortcut for the paragraph symbol
| Symbol | Mac shortcut | Works in |
|---|---|---|
| ¶ | Option + 7 | Pages, Word, Google Docs, TextEdit, Notes, Mail, many web forms |
If the shortcut does not insert the symbol, check your keyboard layout. Open System Settings, go to Keyboard, then review your input source. The Option + 7 shortcut is standard for many common Mac keyboard layouts, including U.S. English, but some international layouts may assign a different character to the same key combination. You can also open the macOS keyboard viewer from the input menu in the menu bar to see which characters appear when you hold Option or Option + Shift.
For apps with rich formatting tools, you may also be seeing formatting marks rather than inserting the actual paragraph symbol. In Microsoft Word, for instance, the toolbar button that looks like ¶ usually toggles hidden formatting marks on and off; it does not type the symbol into your document as ordinary text. To insert a real paragraph symbol that can be copied, searched, styled, or pasted into another app, use Option + 7, the Character Viewer, or the app’s symbol insertion menu.

Practical uses on Mac
- Documents: Use ¶ for legal citations, editing marks, publishing notes, and references to numbered paragraphs.
- Web forms: Try Option + 7 directly in the form field; if it fails, paste the symbol instead.
- Common apps: In Word, Pages, and Google Docs, the symbol can be formatted like normal text, including bold, italics, color, and size.
- Search and replace: A typed ¶ can be found with standard search tools, unlike a visual formatting-mark toggle.
Using Character Map, Character Viewer, and Insert Symbol Tools
If keyboard shortcuts are inconvenient or unavailable, built-in symbol browsers are a reliable way to insert the paragraph symbol (¶). These tools are especially helpful on laptops without a numeric keypad, shared computers with unfamiliar keyboard layouts, or apps where Alt codes and Option shortcuts do not behave as expected. They also let you confirm that you are inserting the true pilcrow character, not a similar-looking mark.
Windows Character Map
On Windows, open Character Map from the Start menu by searching for “Character Map.” Choose a font such as Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, or Segoe UI, then look for the paragraph symbol. To find it faster, enable Advanced view and search for pilcrow or paragraph. Select ¶, choose Select, then Copy. You can then paste it into Word, Google Docs, email, a browser form, a PDF comment, or any text field that accepts standard Unicode characters.
Mac Character Viewer
On macOS, use Character Viewer when you want a visual picker instead of a shortcut. Press Control + Command + Space to open the viewer, then type pilcrow or paragraph in the search field. Click the ¶ symbol to insert it into the active document or text box. If the compact emoji-style panel appears, use the expand button in the corner to open the fuller Character Viewer with categories, search results, and font variations.
Insert Symbol in common writing apps
Many document editors include their own symbol menus. In Microsoft Word for Windows, go to Insert > Symbol > More Symbols, then search within common text fonts or use the character code if available. In Word for Mac, use Insert > Advanced Symbol or the macOS Character Viewer. In Google Docs, choose Insert > Special characters, search for paragraph, and select the pilcrow. These menus are useful when you are already working inside a document and want to avoid switching to a separate system utility.
- For recurring use: add the symbol to a document template, style guide, or snippet manager so you do not need to search for it each time.
- For web forms: copy the symbol from Character Map, Character Viewer, or a trusted document, then paste it directly into the field.
- For consistent formatting: insert the symbol in the same font as the surrounding text unless you specifically need a different appearance.
- For legal, editorial, or proofreading work: confirm that the inserted mark is ¶, since some apps also display nonprinting paragraph marks that are not actual typed characters.
These character tools are slower than a memorized shortcut, but they are dependable and easy to teach. They work well in mixed Windows and Mac environments, in remote desktop sessions, and in publishing workflows where accuracy matters more than speed.
Copy and Paste the Paragraph Symbol
The fastest universal method is to copy the paragraph symbol directly from here: ¶. Select the symbol, copy it with Ctrl + C on Windows or Command + C on Mac, then paste it with Ctrl + V or Command + V wherever you need it. This works in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, email clients, web forms, CMS editors, spreadsheets, chat apps, and most plain-text fields.
If you use the paragraph symbol often, keep a reusable copy somewhere easy to reach. For example, save ¶ in a taking app, a pinned clipboard manager item, a text expansion shortcut, or a document template. In Windows, clipboard history can be opened with Windows + V after it is enabled, making it easy to paste recently copied symbols. On Mac, third-party clipboard managers or text replacement settings can serve the same purpose.
Quick copy-paste options
- Single paragraph symbol: ¶
- Paragraph mark with spaces: ¶
- For labels or proofreading notes: ¶ New paragraph
- For repeated use in drafts: ¶ ¶ ¶
Copy-paste is especially useful in web forms and apps where keyboard shortcuts may be captured by the browser, blocked by the site, or interpreted as another command. For instance, an Alt code that works in a desktop app might not work in an online editor, and a Mac shortcut may behave differently inside a remote desktop session. Pasting the symbol avoids those issues because the finished character is inserted directly into the field.

The paragraph symbol is a standard Unicode character, so it should display correctly in common fonts such as Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Helvetica, and Georgia. If it appears too large, too small, bold, or colored, paste it as plain text when possible. In many apps, you can use Ctrl + Shift + V on Windows or Command + Shift + V on Mac to paste without formatting, though the exact shortcut can vary by application.
Do not confuse the typed paragraph symbol ¶ with the formatting marks shown by word processors. In Microsoft Word and similar apps, the Show/Hide button also uses a pilcrow icon, but that button displays hidden paragraph breaks and spaces; it does not necessarily insert a visible ¶ into your document. If you need the symbol to appear in printed text, exported PDFs, comments, legal references, editorial s, or online content, copy and paste the actual character.

If the paragraph symbol shortcut does not produce ¶, the problem is usually related to the keyboard layout, number entry method, application focus, or a shortcut conflict. On Windows, the Alt code method typically requires the numeric keypad, so pressing the number row above the letters may do nothing. On many laptops, you may need to enable Num Lock or use an embedded keypad function before typing the code.

Windows shortcut problems
For the Windows Alt code, place the cursor where you want the symbol, hold Alt, type 0182 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt. If that fails, check that Num Lock is on and that you are using the keypad numbers, not the top-row numbers. On compact keyboards without a keypad, try the Windows emoji and symbol panel instead: press Windows + ., open the symbols area, and look for the paragraph mark. You can also use Character Map or copy and paste ¶ directly.

On Mac, the usual shortcut is Option + 7 on many English keyboard layouts. If it inserts a different character, your active keyboard layout may not match the shortcut. Open the input menu in the menu bar and confirm the selected layout, such as U.S. or British. You can also open System Settings, go to Keyboard, and review input sources. If the shortcut still does not work in a particular app, use Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer and search for “pilcrow” or “paragraph.”
- Check the app field: Some web forms, password boxes, and plain-text fields block special input or replace characters after submission.
- Try another app: Test the shortcut in Notepad, TextEdit, Word, or Google Docs to see whether the issue is app-specific.
- Watch for shortcut conflicts: Browser extensions, text expanders, clipboard managers, and custom hotkey tools can intercept key combinations.
- Confirm the font: Most modern fonts include ¶, but unusual symbol fonts may display a blank box or a different glyph.
In Microsoft Word, also make sure you are not confusing the typed paragraph symbol with the formatting mark display. The Show/Hide ¶ button on the Home tab displays paragraph marks for editing, but those marks are not the same as inserting a real ¶ character into the document. If you need the actual symbol, use the shortcut, Insert > Symbol, or paste the character.
For repeated use, the most reliable fix is to create your own text replacement. On Windows, you can use AutoCorrect in Word or a trusted text expansion tool to replace a short trigger such as ;;p with ¶. On Mac, go to System Settings > Keyboard > Text Replacements and add a replacement that expands into the paragraph symbol. This avoids keypad issues and works well when writing legal references, editing s, document comments, and web content.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to type the paragraph symbol on Windows?
The quickest method on many Windows keyboards is to hold Alt and type 0182 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt to insert ¶. This usually requires Num Lock to be enabled and a separate numeric keypad or embedded numpad. If that does not work, use Character Map, Word’s Insert Symbol menu, or copy and paste the symbol.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I type the paragraph symbol on a Mac?
On Mac, the common shortcut is Option + 7, which inserts the paragraph symbol ¶ in many apps. You can also open Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space, search for “pilcrow” or “paragraph,” and insert it from there. This is useful when a specific app does not accept the keyboard shortcut.
Why does Alt + 0182 not work on my Windows laptop?
Alt codes often require a numeric keypad, so the number row above the letters may not work. Try turning on Num Lock, using an embedded numpad if your laptop has one, or connecting an external keyboard. If your laptop does not support Alt codes well, Character Map or copy and paste is usually faster.
Can I type the paragraph symbol in Google Docs, Word, or web forms?
Yes, the paragraph symbol works in most document editors and web forms as a normal text character. In Microsoft Word, you can use the keyboard shortcut, Insert Symbol, or copy and paste it directly. In Google Docs and browser forms, copy-paste or your operating system’s character picker is often the most reliable option.
Is the paragraph symbol the same as Word’s formatting mark?
The typed paragraph symbol ¶ is a visible character that becomes part of your text. Word’s formatting mark looks similar, but it is usually just a nonprinting marker that shows where paragraphs end when formatting marks are enabled. If you need the symbol to print or appear in exported text, insert the actual ¶ character.
Bottom Line
The quickest way to type the paragraph symbol is usually Alt + 0182 on Windows or Option + 7 on Mac, but character tools like Character Map, Character Viewer, and copy-paste work well when shortcuts are inconvenient. For occasional use in documents, emails, or web forms, saving the symbol somewhere easy to grab can be the simplest option.
If you use ¶ often, add it to your autocorrect shortcuts, text replacements, or favorite symbols in your preferred app. That way, you can insert it consistently without memorizing codes or opening extra menus each time.
