The division sign is ÷ (Unicode U+00F7). There is no single dedicated key that works across every keyboard: whether it is directly available depends on your selected keyboard layout. If you only need it once, copy and paste this character: ÷.
Why there is no universal division-sign key
Keyboard layouts map characters differently, so the physical key position—if any—that produces ÷ depends on the active layout. A CLDR chart documents variation across layouts, but it is version 29 from 2016, not a complete catalog of current layouts: CLDR keyboard layouts.

The character is named DIVISION SIGN. Unicode 16.0 notes that it is now most commonly used as a symbol indicating division: Unicode Standard, Version 16.0.

Mac: Unicode Hex Input or Character Viewer
- Open System Settings and go to Keyboard, then Input Sources. Add Unicode Hex Input if it is not already available.
- Switch to Unicode Hex Input from the input menu.
- Hold Option and type
00F7to enter ÷.

Linux: Unicode input in GNOME and GTK apps
- Press and release Ctrl + Shift + U.
- Type
00F7. - Press Space or Enter to insert ÷.
This sequence is documented for GNOME and other GTK environments. The Unicode FAQ does not describe an equivalent sequence for KDE or other Qt environments; use a character tool such as GNOME Character Map or KDE KCharSelect instead. Unicode FAQ
Windows: use Character Map
- Search Windows for Character Map and open it.
- Find and select the division sign, then copy it into your document or app.
Character Map is a character-selection option documented by Unicode. The sources do not establish a universal Windows shortcut that works in every application and keyboard configuration, so use the character map or copy and paste rather than assuming an Alt-code will work everywhere. Unicode FAQ

Microsoft Word: use Math AutoCorrect
In Word, type div to enter the division sign through Math AutoCorrect. This is a Word-specific command, not a system-wide Windows shortcut. Microsoft’s symbol table lists the command and code point: Insert math symbols.
Typing ÷ on a Chromebook or phone

A Google Chromebook Community answer from 2019 reports this sequence: press and release Ctrl + Shift + U, type 00F7, then press Space. Because this is community guidance rather than current official device documentation, check whether it works with your Chromebook’s configuration and the app you are using. iPhone and Android
Unicode’s FAQ says iOS and Android do not provide an official hexadecimal Unicode input method or a desktop-style character-selection app bundled with the system. Which method should you use?
- Just once: copy and paste ÷.
- Mac: use Unicode Hex Input or Character Viewer.
- GNOME or another GTK desktop: use Ctrl + Shift + U, then
00F7. - Windows: select it from Character Map.
- Microsoft Word: type
div. - Chromebook: try the community-reported Unicode sequence, with the caveat that it may depend on configuration and app.
- Phone: copy and paste it unless your keyboard offers a convenient symbol picker.
