Check the converted words before posting: the same Hindi word can be spelled several ways with Latin letters, so suggestions may not match your intended meaning. X’s English Help Center says standard posts allow up to 280 characters; its current help pages disagree about longer posts, so check the composer for your account’s limit.
Choose how to enter Hindi
Your choice depends on whether you want the post in Devanagari or prefer to type Hindi sounds with Latin letters. These are input options; neither determines what language the X interface uses.

| Method | What you type and get | Best fit | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Devanagari keyboard | Tap or type Hindi characters directly, producing Devanagari text. | Writers comfortable locating Hindi characters on a touchscreen or physical keyboard. | You may need to switch keyboard layouts. Google’s description of its Android keyboard is historical and does not confirm that the same app or layout is currently available. |
| Transliteration | Type Hindi words approximately with Latin letters, then choose the suggested Devanagari form. Google’s example is namaste → नमस्ते. | Writers who know Hindi pronunciation but find direct Devanagari entry less familiar. | Different Latin spellings can produce the same or competing Hindi suggestions. Review the selected word, spelling, matras and meaning before posting. |
| Roman-script Hinglish | Write Hindi-English communication in the English alphabet. | When you intentionally want a Roman-script message or your audience uses that style. | It is an option, not a script every Hindi reader prefers. Google describes keyboard support for Hinglish and English suggestions, but that does not establish a universal audience preference. |
| Handwriting input | Write Devanagari or Latin characters by hand for recognition and conversion. | When handwriting feels easier than tapping keys and the device’s input method supports it. | Google documented handwriting recognition in an older keyboard article; that source does not establish current availability on every device. |
How to type Hindi with Latin letters
- Open an input method that supports Hindi transliteration. The exact keyboard or app varies by device; the cited Google documentation explains the method but does not confirm current availability across Android, iOS and desktop.
- Type the Hindi word phonetically in Latin letters. For example, Google illustrates namaste converting to नमस्ते.
- Choose the intended Devanagari suggestion. Do not assume the first result is right. Google notes that आदित्य, for example, may be entered as “Aditya,” “Aaditya” or “Adhitya.”
- Read the whole post before sending. Verify the word, matras and sentence meaning in context, especially names and words that can be transliterated more than one way.
Post from a phone or computer
X’s Help Center documents posting from iOS, Android and desktop. Open the post composer, enter or paste the Hindi text using the input method available on that device, review the final text and publish. A post can contain text and media. The precise keyboard-switching controls depend on your operating system and selected input method, so follow the device’s keyboard settings rather than assuming one universal X menu path.

Character limits: standard posts and longer posts
X’s English How to Post page states that a standard post can contain up to 280 characters. For longer posts, official X help pages conflict: the English About different types of Posts page says X Premium members can post up to 25,000 characters, while the English How to Post page says up to 4,000. The Hindi localized types-of-posts page also says 4,000 and specifies a U.S. subscription. The pages do not explain the discrepancy, so there is no single longer-post maximum that these sources establish for every account.

If a longer post matters, check the live composer while signed in and confirm what your account can publish. The English types-of-posts page also says longer posts cannot currently be saved as drafts or scheduled on web. It notes that mentions after the first 280 characters do not notify the mentioned account, and that mentions must be within the first 280 characters for certain conversation controls.
Hindi interface language is separate from Hindi posting
You can write a Hindi post without changing X’s display language: the post text comes from your keyboard or input method. A 2015 Twitter announcement said Hindi and Bengali had already been available as interface languages for more than a year at that time. That is historical context, not a current inventory of language settings; consult the language options shown in your own account if you want the menus in Hindi.

Why X moved beyond 140 characters
In 2017, Twitter expanded the limit to 280 characters for languages it identified as being affected by cramming, while languages such as Japanese were not part of that change. Its historical analysis reported that 0.4% of Japanese tweets and 9% of English tweets were exactly 140 characters. Those figures describe Twitter’s analysis at the time, not current posting behavior or Hindi-language posts.
