For Microsoft Word on Windows, type 00AB for « or 00BB for », then press Alt+X. On macOS, use the Unicode Hex Input source; on GNOME or another GTK desktop, use Ctrl+Shift+U followed by the code. Shortcuts depend on the app and keyboard environment, so these sequences are not universal.
What are the guillemet symbols?
Guillemets are paired quotation marks: the left guillemet is « (U+00AB) and the right guillemet is » (U+00BB). These are not the same as the mathematical less-than and greater-than signs, < and >.

The codes 00AB and 00BB are hexadecimal Unicode code points. They are different from decimal Alt codes, which use numeric-keypad digits and may vary by application or keyboard.
Type guillemets in Microsoft Word on Windows
- Place the cursor where the character should go.
- Type
00ABfor«, or00BBfor». - Press
Alt+Xto convert the code into the character.
Microsoft documents this method for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. If the code comes immediately after another hexadecimal character, select only the four code characters before pressing Alt+X. If the resulting symbol is missing or appears incorrectly, check the selected font. Microsoft’s Word character-code instructions distinguish this Unicode hex method from decimal Alt-code entry; the latter requires numeric-keypad digits with Num Lock on.

Use a character picker in other Windows apps
Alt+X is not a guaranteed Unicode shortcut in every Windows text field. Unicode documents the hex-plus-Alt+X method for Word and Outlook, while other Windows applications may behave differently. For a selection-based alternative, open Character Map, find the guillemet, and copy it into your document. You can also check the app’s own symbol-insertion menu. Unicode’s character-entry FAQ describes the application-specific variations.
Type guillemets on macOS
- Open Keyboard settings and add Unicode Hex Input under Input Sources.
- Switch the active input source to Unicode Hex Input.
- Hold
Optionand type00ABor00BB.
You can also use Character Viewer: choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols or Show Emoji & Symbols from the Input menu, then expand the viewer if necessary to find the character. Unicode’s FAQ documents these macOS options.

GNOME and GTK desktops

This Unicode entry sequence is documented for GNOME and other GTK desktop environments. GNOME Character Map is a selection-based alternative.
KDE and Qt desktops
Unicode says KDE and other Qt desktop environments do not provide an equivalent to the GTK hex-entry sequence. Use the available character picker, such as KCharSelect, or the symbol feature in the application you are using. Unicode’s FAQ covers desktop-environment differences.

Insert guillemets on iPhone, Android and in Google Docs
iOS and Android
Unicode does not document a built-in hexadecimal-code entry method for iOS or Android. Some third-party keyboards may offer one. Depending on the keyboard app and enabled languages, the symbols may also appear in the symbols view or after a long-press on a double-quote key; this behavior is not consistent across devices. If you cannot find them, copy « or » from this page, or use a keyboard or app symbol picker. Unicode’s FAQ explains the limits of mobile code entry, and this keyboard guide describes device-dependent symbol access.
Google Docs
Google’s shortcut documentation does not specify a guillemet-specific key combination and notes that some shortcuts may not work with every language or keyboard. In Docs, use Insert > Special characters, or enter the Unicode code using a supported operating-system method. Google Docs keyboard-shortcut guidance cautions that shortcut availability varies.
