An older MacBook can work as a simple home file server. Using the File Sharing feature built into macOS and the SMB protocol, you can share a chosen folder with other Macs, Windows PCs, and devices on your home network. What you end up with is a shared folder on a laptop, not a purpose-built NAS. It has no built-in redundancy, its availability depends on the machine staying awake and connected, and it does not replace a backup. The steps below use System Settings labels, which can differ slightly between macOS versions and hardware.
What this setup can and cannot do
- It can: share a specific folder over the local network, give each user a separate access level, make that folder reachable from Windows through SMB, and optionally share a folder as a Time Machine backup destination.
- It cannot: provide RAID or automatic redundancy, protect your files from drive failure, guarantee appliance-level uptime, or promise a particular transfer speed. Apple’s documentation does not quantify any of these for a MacBook used this way.
Before you start
- Note your macOS version and MacBook model. Menu names and available options can vary with both.
- Check which ports the MacBook has. You will need them if you plan to attach a drive or a wired Ethernet adapter.
- Decide which folder will be shared. Use a folder created for this purpose rather than your whole home folder or an entire disk.
- Copy anything important somewhere else first. The shared folder is not a backup.
- Plan for power. A laptop running as a server should normally stay on mains power.
Step 1: Create a dedicated shared folder
Apple’s guidance lets administrators reach all volumes on a Mac, so the safer approach is to share one folder with explicit permissions rather than turning on broad access. Create a folder such as Home Share in your user folder, then:

- Open System Settings, click General, then click Sharing.
- Click File Sharing and switch it on.
- In the Shared Folders list, click +, select the folder you created, and click Add.
Sharing a folder does not expose the rest of the disk to other users, which is the main reason to keep the shared area narrow.
Step 2: Set access for each user
With the folder selected, use the Users list to set access for each account. Apple’s file sharing options use four levels:
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| Access level | What it allows | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Read & Write | View, add, change, and delete files | Your own account and members who need full edit access |
| Read Only | View and copy files, without changing them | A media library or reference documents |
| Write Only | Add files without viewing the contents | A drop folder for receiving files from others |
| No Access | Nothing | Any account that should not see the folder |
Avoid guest access unless you deliberately need it. Give each person a named account, and give that account the lowest level that does the job.
Step 3: Enable SMB for Windows and other clients
Apple Support describes SMB as the protocol you can use to share files on your Mac, and it is the route for Windows clients. To set it up:
Rank #2
- Ultra fast data transfers: the external hard drive works with USB 3.0 thickened copper cable to provide super fast transfer speeds. Theoretical read speed is as high as 110MB/s-133MB/s and write speed is as high as 103MB/s.
- Ultra-thin and quiet: the motherboard adopts a noise-free solution, giving you a quiet working environment. Lightweight and portable size designed to fit in your pocket for easy portability.
- Compatibility: compatible with PS4/xbox one/Windows/Linux/Mac/Android,Stable and fast downloading on game console no difference from fast transmission when using on PC.
- Plug and Play: no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use. The hard drive chip is wrapped with aluminum anti-interference layer to increase heat dissipation and protect data
- Package Contents: 1* portable hard drive, 1 *USB 3.0 cable, 1*USB to type C adapter,1 *user manual, shell packaging, three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services
- Go to System Settings > General > Sharing > File Sharing and open the File Sharing options.
- Turn on Share files and folders using SMB.
- In the account list that appears, turn on Windows File Sharing only for the specific Mac account the Windows user will sign in with. Enter that account’s password when prompted.
- Note the Mac’s network address shown in the File Sharing information. A typical address looks like
192.168.1.20; yours will depend on your router. - On the Windows PC, connect to the Mac’s address and sign in with that Mac account’s username and password. From macOS, the equivalent connection uses an
smb://address.
Use a dedicated account for Windows access rather than your main login. Apple cautions that Windows-sharing passwords may be stored less securely than other credentials, so turn the Windows option off for any account you no longer need on that route.

Step 4: Decide how the laptop sleeps
A sleeping MacBook cannot serve files. You have three practical choices, and the right one depends on how much availability you need.
Rank #3
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Keep it awake on power. Connect the charger and prevent sleep in the Energy or Battery settings for your model. This gives the most reliable availability, but it uses more power and keeps the battery under constant charge.
- Allow sleep and accept gaps. Lower power use, but clients cannot reach the folder while the Mac sleeps.
- Use Wake for network access. Open System Settings > Battery > Options and look for Wake for network access. It lets network requests wake the Mac for shared services when the hardware and your router support it. Apple does not promise this works in every router or network configuration, so test it with your own setup.
Apple notes that settings vary by Mac model, and that delaying or preventing sleep can increase power consumption. Apple’s documentation does not give a power figure for any model, so measure the difference on your own machine if it matters to you.
Optional: add external storage
If the MacBook’s internal drive is too small, an external USB or Thunderbolt drive can provide extra shared capacity. Before buying or connecting one, check the following:
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Connector: confirm the drive’s cable fits a port on your specific MacBook, or that you have a suitable adapter.
- Filesystem: a drive formatted as APFS or Mac OS Extended is readable by macOS but not natively by Windows. exFAT is readable by both, though it lacks some macOS-specific features.
- Power: some drives draw enough power from the laptop that they need their own power supply.
- Sharing scope: share a folder on the drive, not the whole volume, and apply the same access levels as in Step 2.
Apple’s documentation does not establish capacities, transfer rates, or recommended drive models for this use, so compatibility has to be confirmed for the exact drive and MacBook.

Wired or Wi-Fi, and what SMB Multichannel changes
If your MacBook has an Ethernet port, a wired connection is the more stable choice for a file share. If it does not, a USB-C or Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can add one, but confirm that the adapter works with your exact model before buying. Apple’s SMB Multichannel documentation states that the feature is enabled by default in macOS Big Sur 11.3 and later. It can improve throughput or provide redundancy only when the server supports it and the relevant network connections are available. No speed improvement is promised, and Apple’s documentation does not include a measured comparison of wired and wireless transfers.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Security boundaries
- Keep the share on your home network. Do not expose SMB directly to the public internet, and do not treat this guide as a remote-access setup.
- Use named accounts with the smallest permissions that work, and avoid guest access.
- If your clients support it, turn on the option to require SMB-encrypted connections in File Sharing options.
- Turn off Windows File Sharing for any account that is not in use.
- Keep macOS updated, since the Mac is now serving files to other devices.
Test the setup and plan a backup
- From each client, confirm that a Read & Write account can create, edit, and delete a file.
- From a Read Only account, confirm that you can open files but cannot change them.
- From an account set to No Access, confirm that the folder does not appear.
- Restart the MacBook and check that the share returns without manual steps.
- Close the lid, or let the Mac sleep as it normally would, and check whether clients can still connect under your chosen sleep setting.
- Keep a separate backup of anything you cannot afford to lose.
File Sharing also offers an option to share a folder as a Time Machine backup destination, with an optional size limit. That lets another Mac back up to the shared folder. It does not mean the shared folder itself is backed up, so the separate backup in the last step still applies.
Old MacBook versus a dedicated NAS
Apple’s documentation covers Mac file sharing but does not compare it with dedicated NAS hardware. The table lists the criteria that matter for the decision, with the MacBook side based on the features described above.
| Criterion | Old MacBook | Dedicated NAS |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware cost | Uses hardware you already own | Not stated in Apple’s documentation; varies by model |
| Power and sleep | Depends on sleep settings; keeping it awake uses more power | Not compared in Apple’s documentation |
| Administration | macOS File Sharing and SMB settings | Vendor-specific management software |
| Storage expansion | Internal drive or attached external drives, depending on ports | Not compared in Apple’s documentation; varies by model |
| Built-in redundancy | None described | Not compared in Apple’s documentation; varies by model |
| Client support | Mac and Windows through SMB | Not compared in Apple’s documentation; varies by model |
For occasional file sharing among household devices, the old MacBook is a workable low-cost option. If you need the share to stay available around the clock or to survive a drive failure, a dedicated device with redundancy and a separate backup is the better fit.
