How to Turn Windows 11 SmartScreen Checks On or Off

Use Windows Security’s Check apps and files setting for downloaded apps and files, or Edge’s separate SmartScreen switch for browser protection.

To change Windows 11’s SmartScreen check for downloaded apps and files, open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection settings, then change Check apps and files. Edge has a separate SmartScreen switch, so change that one if the warning appears while browsing or downloading in Edge.

Change SmartScreen for downloaded apps and files

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Open Windows Security, then choose App & browser control.
  3. Open Reputation-based protection settings.
  4. Find Check apps and files and switch it on or off. Microsoft describes this control as checking the reputation of apps and files downloaded from the web and warning or protecting against unsafe content; it cannot guarantee that a file is safe. Microsoft’s App & browser control guide explains the setting.

Windows labels can vary slightly between releases. If you do not see the setting through Settings, open the Windows Security app from Start and navigate to App & browser control. Microsoft’s general Windows guidance identifies the route into Windows Security at Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.

If the warning is in Microsoft Edge

Edge’s browser protection is controlled separately from the Windows downloaded-apps-and-files check. In Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security, then change Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. This switch applies to Edge protection; it does not change the Windows Check apps and files setting. See Microsoft’s explanation of SmartScreen in Edge.

Which protection setting are you changing?

Protection What it checks or does Where to find it
Windows SmartScreen Checks the reputation of apps and files downloaded from the web and can warn or protect against unsafe content. Windows Security > App & browser control > Reputation-based protection settings > Check apps and files
Edge SmartScreen Provides SmartScreen protection in the Edge browser, including against unsafe sites and downloads. Edge > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Security > Microsoft Defender SmartScreen
Smart App Control Can block apps judged untrusted or potentially harmful. Microsoft says it works alongside antivirus software. Windows Security > App & browser control; configuration and availability depend on the device

These controls are related, but they are not interchangeable. Turning off one removes that particular check or warning; it does not uninstall Windows Security or Microsoft Defender Antivirus, and the other protections may remain enabled. For Smart App Control’s availability and configuration, consult Microsoft’s Smart App Control FAQ.

Why a switch may be unavailable

A work or school administrator may manage Windows Security or Edge settings, leaving a control locked or unavailable. Microsoft says to contact the administrator when a managed security page cannot be changed. Do not try to bypass an organization’s policy with registry edits or other workarounds. If the PC is not managed, check for Windows and Edge updates; interface labels and availability can vary by release. Microsoft’s Edge SmartScreen guidance notes that organizations can manage the Edge setting, and its potentially unwanted apps guidance covers reputation-based settings.

Other reputation-based protection options

In the same reputation-based protection area, Windows also offers potentially unwanted app blocking. Microsoft documents options to block apps, downloads, or both; the download-blocking option is specific to Edge. Potentially unwanted apps are not necessarily malware, so this setting is distinct from a claim that every blocked item is malicious. Details are in Microsoft’s potentially unwanted apps guidance.

SmartScreen still exists in current Windows 11

Microsoft’s servicing notice, published November 4, 2025, applies to Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2: SmartScreen is deprecated in Internet Explorer and IE Mode, but continues in Microsoft Edge and Windows Shell. The notice says downloaded files may carry Mark-of-the-Web metadata and be scanned by Windows Shell when opened. This change does not mean SmartScreen has been removed from Windows 11. Read Microsoft’s Windows 11 SmartScreen servicing notice.
