You can turn a useful passage on a webpage into an editable Anki card with a browser extension connected to Anki Desktop. The basic flow is: select a short passage, put one testable idea on the card, check its question and answer, then save it to a deck. The extension listings describe this workflow, but their features are not independently verified here.
What you need before creating cards
- Anki Desktop: Open it before using the direct-connection workflow.
- AnkiConnect: The add-on provides an HTTP API for external applications. It starts when Anki launches and, by default, binds to
127.0.0.1, limiting access to the same computer. AnkiConnect documentation - A browser extension: Check its current store listing, developer, permissions, and compatibility before installing. Extension capabilities and availability can change.
Anki warns that add-ons can modify arbitrary parts of its code, and an Anki update can break compatibility with older add-ons. See the Anki Manual’s add-ons guidance before relying on one.

How to make a card from a webpage
- Set up the desktop connection. Install Anki Desktop and AnkiConnect using Anki’s add-on flow. Restart Anki if prompted, and leave it open while using the extension. The reviewed extension listing points to
http://127.0.0.1:8765as a local connection check; that address is on your own computer, not a general web service. The reviewed Anki Chrome listing - Choose a deck and note type. In the extension, select where the card should go and which note type it should use. The listing describes selecting text, opening a sidebar, filling fields, and saving.
- Select only the passage you need. Prefer a compact definition, relationship, process step, or example over an entire article. Add enough context to make the prompt understandable when you review it later.
- Write one retrievable question. Ask for a specific fact or idea rather than copying a paragraph onto the front. Put the concise answer on the back and include a source or context field if it will help you interpret the card later.
- Preview and edit both sides. Check that the question makes sense without the webpage and that the answer is accurate, complete, and no longer than it needs to be. If the extension suggests or generates text, verify it against the page before saving.
- Save, then review in Anki. Confirm the card appears in the intended deck and that its front and back display as expected.
Use Anki’s note structure rather than storing whole articles
Anki stores information in notes with fields; card types determine which fields appear on the question and answer sides and can generate more than one card from a note. This makes it possible to keep a source phrase, explanation, or citation in a separate field while testing a single idea. A full article pasted into a card is usually harder to retrieve from memory than a focused prompt.
Choose the browser workflow that fits
| Workflow | What the listing describes | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Selection with manual entry | The reviewed Anki Chrome listing describes highlighting text and creating a card, with direct Anki Desktop integration through AnkiConnect. Chrome Web Store listing | More control over wording and fields, but you need Anki Desktop running and AnkiConnect installed for this connection route. |
| Side-panel workflow | A separate listing describes a persistent side panel, card preview, highlight-to-send, AI autofill, and media upload. Its developer says the extension will not collect or use user data. Chrome Web Store listing | Preview and autofill may reduce entry steps, but inspect generated content and treat the privacy statement as a developer disclosure, not an independent audit. Confirm current connection requirements in the listing. |
These descriptions are store-listing claims, not independently tested results. Features may not work on every page or browser configuration, and permissions or data practices can change. Review the current listing before installation.

Sync cards to other devices without risking your collection
AnkiWeb can synchronize a collection for online review across devices. Some structural changes cannot be merged automatically; when Anki asks you to choose a one-way sync or resolve a conflict, read the prompt carefully and preserve a backup before proceeding. Anki’s guidance explains syncing and one-way syncs and how to back up your collection.
