Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can use VLC to play and process a prerecorded podcast, but its documented stream-output features do not provide a verified, dependable recipe for sending a live feed directly to YouTube over RTMPS. YouTube needs a compatible encoder feed, and an audio-only episode also needs a video source. Use VLC only if your installed version can produce an output YouTube accepts; otherwise, use an encoder such as OBS to combine the episode with visuals and send the stream to YouTube.
What you need before you start
- A prerecorded podcast episode in a format your playback and encoder software supports.
- A visual source for the live video: for example, cover artwork, a branded holding image, or a visualizer. For a test, use the full planned composition; YouTube recommends including audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast.
- A YouTube Live stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, where you can obtain the current stream URL and key. Keep the key private.
- An encoder output compatible with YouTube’s ingest protocol and media settings, plus an upload connection and computer capable of sustaining the selected settings.
A scheduled live event is not the same as uploading a regular video. This workflow sends an encoder feed into a live session.

Prepare the YouTube Live session
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the current Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream and retrieve its stream URL and key from the interface. Interface labels can change, so follow the current YouTube controls rather than relying on a fixed button path.
- Choose an ingest option supported by your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport; its RTMPS guidance describes how to deliver live content through that protocol (YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide).
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or expose it in a command line or shared configuration.
Choose an encoder path: VLC or a separate encoder
What VLC can do
VLC’s stream-output system is a pipeline: it can transcode supported media, combine successive items, and send output to a destination. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 documentation explains the general architecture (Introduction to Stream Output) and documents standard output and network examples such as HTTP (Standard Output Module; Stream over HTTP).
Those examples explain VLC’s output capabilities; they do not establish a guaranteed direct-to-YouTube RTMPS setup. In particular, VLC’s local HTTP, UDP, or RTP examples are not YouTube’s remote ingest connection. A VLC-centered approach is viable only if the specific VLC build and output chain can provide a supported protocol, compatible codecs and container, appropriate stream settings, and reliable continuous playback for your playlist.

When OBS is the more practical route
If VLC cannot produce a compatible YouTube feed, use a separate encoder stage. OBS documents media sources for common audio files and a VLC Video Source that requires VLC to be installed (OBS Media Sources). This gives you building blocks to combine podcast audio with a visual source and encode the resulting scene. Exact source timing, scene setup, and platform settings depend on the installed software versions; confirm them in your own setup rather than assuming an unattended playlist will behave correctly.
Choose between the paths based on whether your VLC build supports the necessary protocol and output format, whether the playlist stays continuous, how much setup you can manage, and whether your computer can encode while you monitor audio, video, and YouTube stream health.

Set encoder settings YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s current encoder guidance is codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-dependent. The values below are recommendations in YouTube Help’s living guidance, accessed 2026-10-04, not guarantees that your particular computer or internet connection can sustain them (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
Recommended Free Tools
| Setting | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS | Choose a codec supported by your encoder and ingest path. |
| Video bitrate at 1080p/30 fps | H.264: 10 Mbps recommended; AV1/H.265: 15 Mbps recommended | These are codec-specific recommendations; choose a bitrate your upload and hardware can maintain. |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate | Set constant bitrate where your encoder exposes the option. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Use a supported audio codec for the encoded feed. |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz recommended | Use these as YouTube’s current stereo recommendations, not as a substitute for checking the selected encoder’s supported settings. |
Do not select a resolution or bitrate solely because it appears in a recommendation table. A setting above your sustained upload capacity can cause an unstable ingest; your encoder must also support the selected codec and settings.

Test the full broadcast before promoting it
- Start a test broadcast with the same episode, visual source, audio level, motion, resolution, and encoder settings planned for the real session. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Confirm that the episode audio is audible and synchronized with the picture, and that the intended artwork or visualizer appears.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status and messages before going public. Monitor them during the broadcast as well.
- If the test is unhealthy, reduce the output demands or address the encoder/source issue, then test again before promoting the event.
Copyright and channel considerations
Only stream podcast audio and visuals you have the rights to use on YouTube. Permission to publish an episode as a podcast does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast its music, clips, guest material, or artwork in a live stream. YouTube’s live-session requirements and rights checks apply to the broadcast; review the current rules in YouTube Studio before scheduling, especially if the episode includes licensed material. A live encoder workflow also does not turn a live session into a normal video upload.
