To turn on Wi‑Fi, use the wireless or airplane-mode key or switch on your HP Ultrabook, then make sure Wi‑Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is off in Windows. Many HP laptops use F12 for wireless, but the control varies by model. Once Wi‑Fi is on, select your network and connect.
Turn on the HP Ultrabook’s wireless control

Look across the keyboard’s function row and along the laptop’s edges for a wireless-signal or airplane icon. HP says the control may be a keyboard key, touch control, or physical slider, depending on the model. F12 is common on some HP laptops, but it is not universal. Press the key or operate the control marked with the wireless or airplane icon. If a function-row key does not respond, try holding Fn while pressing it; some keyboards require Fn for function-key actions.

Check the key light or Windows network icon to see whether wireless has been enabled. A lit indicator’s meaning can vary by model, so also check the Windows settings in the next section.

Enable Wi‑Fi and connect in Windows
Turning on the laptop’s wireless control and joining a network are separate steps. HP’s connection instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels and screens may differ in other Windows versions. HP’s wireless setup guide was last updated in March 2023.

Make sure Airplane mode is off and Wi‑Fi is on. If Wi‑Fi is off, enable it.

Select the network you want to join, choose Connect, and enter its password or security key if Windows requests it.

Confirm that Windows reports the network as connected. A wireless control can be on even when you have not joined a network; HP notes that “A wireless network must be set up before a wireless connection is possible.”
If you do not know the network name or password, ask the router owner or network administrator.

Open HP Support Assistant and run Network Check if it is available on your laptop. HP includes this diagnostic in its wireless connection troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether Windows recognizes the adapter

Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.

Look for the laptop’s wireless adapter. If it is absent or has a warning indicator, the device may not be recognized or its driver may have a problem.

Follow HP’s troubleshooting guidance to reinstall the wireless device driver and scan for hardware changes. Get the driver for your exact HP model and Windows version from its model-specific HP support page.

When to seek model-specific help
If the adapter remains unavailable after diagnostics and driver troubleshooting, consult the support page for the exact laptop model or contact HP service. Key locations, driver packages, and recovery options vary by model; avoid trying BIOS changes or opening the laptop as a general first step.
