How to Turn On Smart Control on a Samsung Oven

Pair a compatible Samsung oven with SmartThings, then close the door and tap Smart Control on the oven when remote operation is needed. Gas ovens in the US cannot be started remotely.

To use Smart Control, first connect your compatible Samsung oven to SmartThings. For a remote cooking session, close the oven door and tap Smart Control on the oven’s display; pairing the appliance alone does not enable remote authority. Menu names and available functions vary by model and region.

Before you start: check your model and controls

Confirm that your exact oven or range supports SmartThings and Smart Control. Use its manual if the menu or button differs from the steps below: Samsung’s instructions show more than one setup method, and features vary by model, country, and software version.

  • Touch-screen models: Samsung’s Australian and Spanish setup instructions use Settings > Easy Connection > Connect to start pairing.
  • Some models with physical controls: Press and hold Smart Control until AP appears to enter pairing mode.

These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable steps for every Samsung oven. Samsung Australia’s oven connection guide describes the setup paths.

Connect the oven to SmartThings

  1. Install or open the SmartThings app and sign in to your Samsung account.
  2. In the app, start the device-add flow, choose the oven, and follow the prompts to assign it to a location or room.
  3. Put the oven into pairing mode using the method specified for your model: either the touch-screen menu or, on some models, the long press until AP appears.
  4. Select your home Wi-Fi network in SmartThings and complete the registration prompts. Samsung’s UK guide recommends a 2.4 GHz network and using the same router for the phone and appliance during setup; this is regional guidance, and that guide was last updated in 2021. See Samsung UK’s connection instructions.

Wait for the app to finish registering the oven to your Samsung account. The appliance should then appear in SmartThings; the functions shown on its device card depend on the model.

Enable Smart Control for remote operation

  1. Close the oven door.
  2. Tap Smart Control on the oven’s control display.
  3. Open the oven’s card in SmartThings and use only the controls available for your model.

Samsung describes Smart Control as a separate step from connecting the range to SmartThings: it grants remote authority for a cooking session. Opening the door, or completing or canceling cooking, revokes that authority. To resume remote control, close the door and activate Smart Control again as directed by the oven. Samsung US explains Smart Control and remote operation.

What gas and electric ovens can do remotely

Gas ovens

In the United States, Samsung states: “For safety reasons, you cannot turn on a gas oven remotely.” A gas oven must be started from its local control panel. Remote adjustment or shutoff after local activation is a separate capability and depends on the model.

Electric ovens

Samsung says supported electric ranges may allow remote start after they have been paired with SmartThings and Smart Control has been activated. Pairing does not by itself start a cooking session; follow the local display prompts and use the SmartThings controls available for your appliance. See Samsung’s US range guidance.

If SmartThings cannot find or control the oven

  • Check the setup path: Update SmartThings and follow the app’s device-specific prompts. Available steps can depend on whether the oven was previously set up, is already connected to a network, or was registered by a previous owner. Samsung’s SmartThings setup guidance covers different registration situations.
  • Check signal and network: Samsung warns that a weak Wi-Fi signal can impair SmartThings functions. Follow the setup guidance for your region and router.
  • Check Smart Control status: If the oven is visible in the app but remote operation is unavailable, make sure the door is closed and activate Smart Control at the oven for that session.
  • Check registration ownership: If the appliance was previously registered, use Samsung’s ownership or household-invitation process rather than assuming a factory reset is required. The available process may depend on the oven’s registration status.

Why app controls may differ

SmartThings options are not identical across all Samsung ovens or markets. For example, Samsung’s Colombia support page describes monitoring and turning the oven off while Smart Control is inactive, and a broader set of functions—including turning it on and error detection—when active. Treat those controls as specific to the supported models and market described there, not as a promise for every oven. Read Samsung Colombia’s feature description.

If your app labels or oven menu do not match these examples, follow the manual for your model and the current prompts in SmartThings. Regional support pages illustrate common workflows but do not establish that every model has the same interface or remote functions.
