Night Light is Android’s built-in screen-color setting for dim-light use. On Google Pixel devices, it adds an amber tint and can be switched on manually, scheduled for custom hours, or linked to sunset and sunrise. The exact menu on other Android phones can differ, so use the Pixel path as a reference and search your Settings app when labels do not match.
This guide covers Pixel phones, Pixel Tablet, and the safest way to locate the equivalent control on another Android device. It also explains why sunset scheduling may fail, how to stop automatic activation, and which related display settings are separate from Night Light.

What Night Light does
Google describes Night Light as a display feature that “tints your screen amber to make it easier to look at your screen or read in dim light.” That description comes from Google Pixel Tablet Help. It is a screen-color adjustment built into the device, not a separate app or accessory.
The setting changes the color appearance of the display. The official setup instructions do not establish that Night Light prevents eye strain, improves sleep, or provides a medical benefit, so treat it as a viewing-preference setting rather than a health treatment. You can enable it whenever you want, use a schedule, or leave automatic scheduling off.

Before you start
- Keep the phone or tablet unlocked so you can open Settings and test the display immediately.
- If you want sunset-to-sunrise automation on a Pixel phone, leave location services on. Google says that schedule depends on location services.
- Decide whether you want a fixed daily period or a schedule that follows local sunset and sunrise.
- Remember that Night Light is separate from Dark theme and Bedtime mode. Those controls may appear near one another in Pixel help, but changing them does not configure Night Light.
Turn on Night Light and schedule it on a Pixel phone
Google’s phone instructions use the following menu labels. If your Pixel uses a different Android release, labels may have minor wording changes, but the documented location is under Display & touch.
Enable Night Light manually
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Tap Night Light.
- Turn on the Night Light switch.
The screen should change to the Night Light color treatment as soon as the switch is enabled. If you only want to test the feature, stop here and leave the schedule unchanged.
Set fixed start and end times
- From Settings > Display & touch > Night Light, tap Schedule.
- Select Turns on at custom time.
- Enter the time when Night Light should start.
- Enter the time when it should end.
- Return to the Night Light screen and confirm that the schedule is selected.
A custom schedule is useful when you want the same clock times every day. The schedule controls automatic activation; the Night Light switch still lets you turn the feature on or off manually when needed.

Use sunset-to-sunrise
- Open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light.
- Tap Schedule.
- Select Turns on from sunset to sunrise.
- Make sure the device’s location services are on.
Pixel uses location information to determine the local sunset and sunrise times. If location services are disabled, Google says the sunset-to-sunrise schedule will not work.

Stop automatic activation
- Open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light.
- Tap Schedule.
- Select None.
Choosing None removes automatic scheduling. It does not prevent you from turning Night Light on manually with the main switch.
Toggle Night Light from Quick Settings
Pixel phones can expose Night Light in Quick Settings, according to Google Pixel Phone Help. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings and look for a Night Light tile. Tap the tile to toggle the feature without opening the full Settings app. If the tile is not visible, edit the Quick Settings layout and check whether Night Light is available among the additional tiles.
Manage Night Light on a Pixel Tablet
Pixel Tablet uses the same broad Display & touch area, but Google documents the intensity control explicitly for the tablet. Some of the tablet steps apply only to Android 15 and later, so an older tablet software version may not show every option described below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTurn it on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Switch on Night Light.
Schedule it
- Open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light.
- Tap Schedule.
- Select the scheduling option shown on your tablet.
Google’s tablet instructions do not establish that every tablet offers exactly the same schedule labels as a Pixel phone. Use the choices displayed on your device rather than assuming that a missing option is hidden elsewhere.

Adjust the intensity
- Open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light.
- Make sure Night Light is switched on.
- Use the intensity slider to make the amber tint weaker or stronger.
The intensity slider is specifically documented for Pixel Tablet. Do not assume that another Android phone or tablet has an equivalent slider, even if it has a Night Light setting.
Find the equivalent setting on another Android phone
Android manufacturers can rename menus or place display-color controls in different locations. The official instructions available for this topic verify the Pixel paths but do not establish exact steps for every non-Pixel manufacturer.
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Use the Settings search field and enter Night Light.
- Open the result that controls the display’s night-time color or screen tint.
- Look for a switch, a schedule control, or both.
- If the result is absent, search for related wording such as a display color or eye-comfort setting, then read the description before changing it.
Search is safer than following a Pixel-only menu path on a different brand. If the search returns a feature with a different name, compare its description with what you need: a screen-color change that can be enabled manually or automatically. The available controls, schedule choices, and intensity adjustment depend on the device software.
Choosing the right schedule
| Schedule choice | How it behaves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| None | Night Light does not turn on automatically. | Manual control only. |
| Turns on at custom time | Night Light activates and deactivates at the start and end times you enter. | A consistent daily routine based on clock time. |
| Turns on from sunset to sunrise | Night Light follows local sunset and sunrise on a Pixel phone; location services must be on. | A schedule that changes with daylight through the year. |
The table reflects the options Google documents for Pixel phones. A different Android device may present fewer choices or use different wording.

Troubleshoot common Night Light problems
“I cannot find Night Light”
- On a Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet, open Settings > Display & touch and look for Night Light.
- On another Android device, search Settings for Night Light instead of assuming the Pixel menu exists.
- Check that you are in display settings, not only in accessibility, battery, or wallpaper settings.
- If the feature is still absent, the device software may use a different label or may not expose the same control. The documented Pixel instructions do not confirm a universal menu for all Android manufacturers.
Sunset-to-sunrise does not turn on
- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Check that location services are enabled.
- Return to Settings > Display & touch > Night Light > Schedule.
- Confirm that Turns on from sunset to sunrise is selected rather than None or a custom schedule.
- Wait for the next schedule transition; the option is based on sunset and sunrise rather than a fixed clock time.
For Pixel phones, location services are the specific dependency Google identifies for this schedule. If they are off, changing the Night Light switch alone will not restore sunset automation.
The screen changes, but the tint is too strong or too weak
On Pixel Tablet, open the Night Light screen while the feature is on and move the intensity slider. Google does not document the same slider for every Android device, so a phone without that control may offer only an on/off switch or a differently named adjustment.
Night Light turns on when you did not expect it
- Open Settings > Display & touch > Night Light.
- Tap Schedule.
- Check whether a custom time or sunset-to-sunrise option is selected.
- Select None if you want to stop automatic activation.
After selecting None, use the main Night Light switch or Quick Settings tile for manual activation.

The tablet does not show every option in this guide
Google’s Pixel Tablet page notes that some steps work only on Android 15 and up. Check the tablet’s Android version before treating a missing control as a fault. The documented phone and tablet interfaces are similar, but they are not guaranteed to expose identical controls.
Night Light is not Dark theme or Bedtime mode
Night Light changes the screen’s color tint. Dark theme changes the appearance of supported interfaces, and Bedtime mode is a separate digital-wellbeing feature. Pixel help discusses these settings in related display guidance, but they do not configure Night Light’s switch or schedule. If your goal is an amber screen tint, open Night Light directly.
A practical setup checklist
- Open the correct display menu: Settings > Display & touch > Night Light on Pixel devices.
- Turn on the Night Light switch and confirm that the display appearance changes.
- Choose Turns on at custom time and enter both times if you want a fixed routine.
- Choose Turns on from sunset to sunrise only when location services are on.
- Choose None when you want to prevent automatic activation.
- On Pixel Tablet, adjust intensity with the documented slider while Night Light is on.
- On a non-Pixel phone, search Settings for Night Light and follow the controls your device actually presents.
- Use the Pixel Quick Settings tile for faster manual toggling when it is available.
What the documented instructions do—and do not—promise
The official guidance establishes how to enable Night Light, select Pixel phone schedules, use the sunset location dependency, access the Pixel Quick Settings control, and adjust intensity on Pixel Tablet. It does not provide outcome statistics or medical evidence, and it does not define one universal menu for every Android manufacturer. Set it up as a display preference and verify the behavior on your own device after saving the schedule.
