How to Turn On Light Alerts for Phone Notifications

Turn on camera, screen, or edge light alerts using the settings built into Android, iPhone, and Samsung Galaxy phones.

To make a phone flash when notifications arrive, turn on its built-in flash-alert setting: Android calls it Flash notifications, while iPhone calls it Flash for Alerts. Depending on the model, the light may come from the rear camera flash, the screen, or an edge effect—not a dedicated notification LED.

Choose the kind of light alert your phone supports

“LED notification” can refer to more than one feature. Some phones have a small dedicated notification light; others use the rear camera flash, illuminate the screen, or show an edge-lighting effect. The settings below turn on built-in features, so you do not need to buy an accessory.

Think about where the phone sits when you need to notice alerts. A rear flash may be hard to see if the phone is face-up, while a screen flash is visible from the front. Availability and behavior depend on the device and its software.

Camera-flash notifications are not available on every Android device. Google also says, “Flash notifications still work in silent mode,” and that the feature follows Do Not Disturb settings.
