Dark Mode and Focus are separate iPhone settings: enable Dark Mode for the screen’s appearance, then turn on Focus to manage notifications and interruptions. You can switch either one on manually or set a schedule.
Turn on Dark Mode in Settings

On iOS 27: Open Settings > Appearance, then select Dark.

On iOS 26 and earlier: Open Settings > Display & Brightness, then select Dark.

Use Control Center for a quick Dark Mode toggle

Open Control Center. On iPhone X and later, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPhone SE and iPhone 8 and earlier, swipe up from the bottom edge.

Touch and hold the brightness bar, then tap the Dark Mode control.

If Dark Mode is not shown, edit Control Center, tap Add a Control, and add Dark Mode.

Turn on Focus

Open Control Center and tap Focus.

Choose the Focus you want, such as Do Not Disturb.
You can also manage Focus in Settings > Focus. To turn off an active Focus, tap it again. Apple’s iPhone Focus guide covers manual activation and automatic scheduling.

Set Dark Mode or Focus to turn on automatically
Schedule Dark Mode
In Dark Mode settings, select Automatic, then tap Options. Apple lists Sunset to Sunrise and Custom Schedule options. On iOS 26 and earlier, find these controls under Settings > Display & Brightness; on iOS 27, use Settings > Appearance.
Schedule a Focus
Go to Settings > Focus, choose a Focus, and add a schedule based on a time, location, or app. If Do Not Disturb turns on when you do not expect it, check its schedules under Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb. See Apple’s Do Not Disturb instructions.

Why Focus does not automatically turn on Dark Mode
The documented controls treat Focus and Dark Mode separately. Turning on a Focus changes how notifications and interruptions are handled; it does not, according to Apple’s instructions, enable Dark Mode by itself. Turn on or schedule each feature separately.
