To use Bluetooth on a laptop, turn Bluetooth on, put the accessory into pairing mode, and select it from the laptop’s nearby-device list. The steps differ between Windows 11, legacy Windows 10, and macOS; the accessory’s instructions determine how to make it discoverable.
How do I turn on Bluetooth on my laptop?
First make sure the laptop has Bluetooth hardware. Most Windows devices include it, but some do not; if the option is missing, check the laptop’s specifications and manufacturer support.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Switch Bluetooth on.
You can also open Quick Settings by selecting the Network, Sound, or Battery icon beside the clock, then select Bluetooth. If the Bluetooth tile is absent, add it to Quick Settings.
Windows 10 (legacy)
Open Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices and turn Bluetooth on. These are Windows 10 labels, not the Windows 11 path. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; the PC continues to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. How do I pair my Bluetooth headphones to my laptop?
The same basic pairing flow applies to headphones and other supported accessories such as keyboards, mice, speakers, phones, printers, or scanners.
- Turn on the headphones and use their controls to enter pairing mode. The button or sequence varies by model; check the headphone documentation. Some devices are discoverable only for a limited time.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and select Add device, then choose the Bluetooth option and select the headphones when they appear.
- If a supported accessory triggers a Swift Pair notification, select Connect instead.
- Follow any code or confirmation prompt. On Windows 10, choose Add Bluetooth or other device under Bluetooth & other devices, then select the headphones.
Once paired, a device can generally reconnect automatically when it is in range and Bluetooth is on. For headphones, a Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee that Windows is using them for audio output; check the relevant Windows sound settings if sound still comes from another device.

How do I connect a Bluetooth device to a MacBook?
- Make the accessory discoverable using its own controls and instructions.
- On the Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Bluetooth.
- Select the nearby accessory and click Connect. If prompted for a code or approval, follow the onscreen instructions.
A paired accessory generally reconnects automatically while Bluetooth is on. If it does not, select it again in Bluetooth settings. For an Apple Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, or Magic Trackpad, Apple’s instructions are to connect it to the Mac with its cable, switch it on so green is visible, and wait for the pairing notification. - The laptop may not have Bluetooth hardware. Check its specifications and manufacturer support rather than assuming every laptop includes it.
- A physical Bluetooth switch may be off. If the laptop has one, check that it is enabled.
- Bluetooth may be disabled or Airplane mode enabled. Check the Bluetooth setting and make sure Airplane mode is off.
- A driver or configuration issue may be involved. On Windows, check Windows Update and follow Microsoft’s driver guidance if the Bluetooth option remains missing. If the laptop has no Bluetooth hardware, a driver alone cannot add it.

Why won’t my laptop find my Bluetooth device?
Check the simple, reversible causes first. An accessory that is off, not discoverable, low on charge, or too far away may not appear or may fail to connect. Low battery can prevent some devices from entering pairing mode or maintaining a stable connection.
- Confirm Bluetooth is on and Airplane mode is off. Make sure the accessory is powered, charged, nearby, and in pairing mode.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. On Windows, if the accessory appears in the device list but will not connect, remove it and add it again.
- On Windows 11, run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help. If the problem persists, check Windows Update and follow the recommended driver steps.
- If a device does not appear in Windows, check the Bluetooth device-discovery setting; Microsoft says choosing Advanced may help it appear.
- If a nearby unshielded USB device is connected to a USB 3.0 port and Bluetooth becomes sluggish or unresponsive, temporarily move or disconnect that USB device to see whether behavior changes.
Bluetooth problems can stem from laptop settings, drivers, the accessory, range, battery, or updates, so no single step is guaranteed to resolve every case. Can I add Bluetooth to a laptop with a USB adapter?
Yes. If you have confirmed that a Windows laptop lacks Bluetooth hardware, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth capability. It is not the first step for a laptop that already has Bluetooth, and it is not a guaranteed fix for driver, pairing, or other hardware faults.
