To stop entering a PIN, pattern, or password on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Screen lock type, verify your current credential, then choose Swipe or None if available. Swipe keeps a gesture to unlock; None removes the screen-lock method.
Turn off the PIN, pattern, or password
- Open Settings.
- Tap Lock screen and AOD. Depending on your device or region, the menu may be called Lock Screen.
- Tap Screen lock type.
- Enter your current PIN, pattern, or password when prompted.
- Choose Swipe to keep a swipe-to-unlock step, or None to remove the screen-lock method if that option appears. Follow any confirmation prompts.
- Lock the device and wake it to check how the new setting behaves.
This is Samsung’s general settings flow; the exact labels and available choices vary by device, software version, and region. Samsung’s US guidance uses Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Screen lock type. Samsung Australia’s guide uses Settings > Lock Screen > Screen lock type, and was updated August 10, 2026. If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for “Screen lock type.”

Swipe or None: what changes?

Swipe is not the same as None: it removes the credential prompt but still requires a gesture. Samsung characterizes both Swipe and None as the lowest-security options. Its UK guidance, dated December 31, 2024, says some features may be disabled at these security levels, including some banking apps and biometric information. The effect depends on the device and app; it is not guaranteed that a particular app will stop working.

Some Galaxy devices do not offer both choices. Choose Swipe if it is offered and meets your needs; otherwise, use one of the lock types listed on your device. Samsung’s New Zealand removal guidance, dated May 9, 2024, and its other regional instructions do not establish a universal workaround for a missing None option. Check the support page or manual for your specific model and software.

If you do not know the current credential
The screen-lock settings flow requires the existing PIN, pattern, or password when prompted; it is not a way to bypass a forgotten credential. Use Samsung’s account or device recovery guidance for your model rather than trying to change this setting without authorization.
Consider the security tradeoff
Removing the credential barrier makes it easier for anyone who gets hold of the device to access its contents. Keep a PIN, pattern, or password if the device contains information you need to protect or if your apps require a more secure lock. Samsung’s guidance notes that some apps, such as banking apps, require greater security; exact requirements vary by app.
