How to Turn Off the Green Light on Your Alexa or Echo Speaker

A pulsing green Echo light signals an incoming call; a spinning one signals a call or Drop In. Here’s how to stop it and adjust the right setting.

To stop a green Echo light, first identify its pattern: pulsing or flashing green means an incoming call; spinning or cycling green means an active call or Drop In. Say “Alexa, hang up” to end an active call. To prevent future Drop Ins, turn off Drop In for that Echo in the Alexa app. Do Not Disturb is the temporary option for pausing calls and messages.

What the green light means

Amazon describes a pulsing green light as an incoming call and a spinning green light as an active call or Drop In. Its developer guidance uses “cycling green” for an active call. The pattern matters because the light reports a communications status; Amazon’s documented fixes address the call, Drop In, or communication settings rather than a separate green-light brightness control. See Amazon’s Echo light meanings and light-ring indicator guidance.

Stop the green light that is on now

If it is spinning or cycling

Say “Alexa, hang up” or “Hang Up” to end the active call or Drop In. If you did not expect it, check Alexa voice history: Amazon recommends doing so because Alexa may have misheard a request and started a call or Drop In. Follow Amazon’s green-light troubleshooting steps.

If it is pulsing or flashing

This pattern indicates an incoming call. Do Not Disturb can temporarily suppress calls and messages; say “Alexa, turn on Do Not Disturb,” or in the Alexa app go to Devices > Echo & Alexa > your device > Do Not Disturb. Turn Do Not Disturb off when you want calls and messages to resume. Amazon lists this option in its Alexa device FAQs.

Prevent Drop In or other communications on one Echo

In the Alexa app, open Devices > Device Type filter > Echo & Alexa > your device > Settings > Communication. Choose the control that matches what you want to stop:

  • Turn off Drop In to prevent permitted household members and contacts from connecting to that Echo through Drop In. This changes the setting for the selected device.
  • Turn off Communication only if you intend to disable all communication options on that Echo, not just Drop In.

Amazon documents these device-specific controls in Turn Off Communications for Specific Alexa Devices. Its explanation of the feature is in How Does Drop In Work with Alexa?.

If the app labels differ

Amazon’s documented route and exact labels may change with app or device software. The available sources do not provide a complete compatibility matrix by Echo model, app version, or region. If a label is different, open the selected Echo’s settings and look for Communication or Do Not Disturb controls; Amazon’s troubleshooting page also lists disabling Drop In or Communications for the affected device.
