On the original Logitech MX Keys, press the key with the backlight icon repeatedly until the keyboard reaches L0, which Logitech defines as backlight off. The keyboard has eight backlight levels, so you may need to press the control more than once.
Turn off the backlight on the original MX Keys
- Find the key marked with the backlight symbol on your keyboard.
- Press it repeatedly to cycle through the backlight levels until the display or level indication reaches L0. L0 means no backlight. Logitech documents eight levels, but its support instructions do not identify a specific key name or function-key combination. Logitech’s MX Keys setup guide describes changing levels at any time.
Why the backlight may turn off by itself
Room brightness
The original MX Keys has an ambient light sensor that adjusts the lighting to the room. Logitech lists no backlight when ambient light is above 200 lux, so the keys may go dark in a bright environment without a manual setting change.

Low battery
Logitech says the backlight turns off when the battery reaches 10%, and cannot be turned on again while the battery is low. The company says users can continue typing for more than 500 hours without backlighting when the battery is low; that figure applies to typing without the lights under this stated condition, not to every usage pattern.

For the original MX Keys, Logitech’s setup page mentions Logitech Options for notifications about backlight levels. Do not follow MX Keys S-specific controls as if they applied to the original model.

For MX Keys S, Logitech documents backlight duration and brightness settings in Logi Options+. Open Logi Options+, select the keyboard, then adjust Backlighting Duration or switch Automatic Brightness to manual mode. These controls are documented for MX Keys S in Logitech’s MX Keys S backlighting instructions.
