How to turn off that annoying Google Maps popup navigation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Maps can keep directions visible in a small floating navigation window when you switch apps or leave the main Maps screen. This is usually caused by Android’s Picture-in-Picture feature, overlay permissions, or persistent navigation notifications designed to keep turn-by-turn guidance accessible.

If that floating popup feels more annoying than helpful, you can dismiss it temporarily or stop it from appearing again by changing a few Android settings. The exact menus vary slightly by phone model and Android version, but the controls are typically found under app permissions, Picture-in-Picture access, display-over-other-apps access, and notification settings for Google Maps.

What Google Maps Popup Navigation Is

Google Maps popup navigation is the small floating window that can appear on top of other apps while turn-by-turn directions are active. On many Android phones, this is Google Maps using Picture-in-Picture, often shortened to PiP. Instead of keeping the full Maps screen open, Android shrinks navigation into a movable mini-window so you can check another app while still seeing the next turn, route progress, or lane guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The popup usually appears after you start navigation in Google Maps and then press the Home button, swipe to the home screen, switch apps, or lock and unlock the phone in certain situations. Depending on your Android version, device brand, and Maps version, the window may show a simplified map, the next maneuver, distance to the next turn, estimated arrival time, or a compact navigation card. You can normally drag it around the screen, tap it to reopen full Google Maps, or dismiss it temporarily.

This floating navigation window is separate from standard Google Maps notifications. A navigation notification usually sits in the notification shade or on the lock screen and may show directions, remaining travel time, and controls for ending navigation. The popup, by contrast, is an on-screen overlay-style window that stays visible above other apps. That distinction matters because turning off one setting may not disable the other.

Common features that can create a Maps popup

  • Picture-in-Picture: The most common cause of the small floating navigation window when you leave Google Maps during active navigation.
  • Display over other apps: An Android permission that allows an app to draw content above other apps. Some devices or Maps-related features may rely on this style of permission.
  • Navigation notifications: Persistent alerts that keep route guidance active and may reappear when navigation is running in the background.
  • Driving mode or Assistant features: On some phones, driving-related settings can make navigation cards or prompts feel like recurring popups.

The popup is designed for convenience and safety: it keeps navigation visible without requiring you to constantly reopen Google Maps. For example, if you need to answer a message, change music, or check a rideshare app, the mini navigation window can remain on screen so you do not miss your next turn. However, it can be frustrating if it blocks buttons, covers content, appears when you thought Maps was closed, or keeps returning after you swipe it away.

It also helps to know that the popup normally depends on an active navigation session. If you have only opened Google Maps to browse an address or preview a route, PiP usually should not appear. If you tapped Start for turn-by-turn directions, Maps may continue running in the background until you end navigation. Swiping away the floating window may only hide it for the moment; it does not always stop the route. To prevent it permanently, you typically need to disable Picture-in-Picture for Google Maps, adjust overlay permissions, reduce navigation notifications, or fully end the current navigation session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to Close the Popup Navigation Window Temporarily

If Google Maps has shrunk into a small floating navigation window, you can close it without changing any permanent settings. This usually happens when you leave the Maps app during active navigation, such as by pressing the Home button, switching apps, or locking and unlocking your phone. The floating window is meant to keep directions visible, but if it is blocking another app or getting in the way, you can dismiss it for the current trip.

On most Android phones, the quickest method is to tap the floating Google Maps window once to reveal its controls. You may see an X, a close button, or an option to expand it back to full screen. Tap the X to remove the floating window. If there is no visible close button, press and hold the popup, then drag it toward the bottom of the screen where a Remove, Close, or trash can target appears. Release it there to dismiss the popup.

Temporary ways to dismiss the popup

  • Tap the popup, then tap X: This closes the floating window while navigation may continue in the background.
  • Drag it to Remove: Long-press the floating window and move it to the removal area that appears on screen.
  • Return to Maps and stop navigation: Tap the popup to reopen Google Maps, then tap Exit or Stop to end turn-by-turn directions completely.
  • Swipe away the Maps card: Open the recent apps screen and swipe Google Maps away. This may stop the current navigation session on some devices.
  • Use the notification shade: Swipe down from the top of the screen, find the Google Maps navigation notification, and tap Exit navigation, Stop, or a similar control if shown.

If you still need directions but do not want the floating window on top of another app, choose the option that closes only the popup rather than stopping navigation. For example, dragging the bubble to Remove may keep voice guidance running, while tapping Exit inside Maps usually ends the trip entirely. The exact labels vary by phone maker, Android version, and Google Maps version, so look for similar wording such as Dismiss, Close, Stop, or End navigation.

For Android Auto, driving mode, or a phone connected to a car display, the popup may behave differently. If Maps keeps appearing while connected to your vehicle, disconnect Bluetooth or unplug the USB cable briefly, then close the navigation session from the main Maps screen. If you only want to hide the window for the moment, avoid pressing Home during navigation; instead, open the app you need from the recent apps screen after dismissing the floating Maps window.

How to Turn Off Picture-in-Picture for Google Maps

On Android, the small floating Google Maps navigation window is usually powered by Picture-in-Picture, often shortened to PiP. When this permission is enabled, Maps can shrink into a movable mini-window after you press the Home button, switch apps, or leave the main Maps screen during active navigation. Turning off PiP for Google Maps prevents that floating navigation box from appearing automatically.

Disable Picture-in-Picture from Android settings

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
  2. Go to Apps or Apps & notifications, depending on your device.
  3. Tap See all apps if you do not immediately see the full app list.
  4. Find and select Maps or Google Maps.
  5. Tap Picture-in-picture. On some phones, this may be under Advanced, Special app access, or Appear on top.
  6. Turn off Allow picture-in-picture.

After this setting is turned off, start a route in Google Maps and press the Home button to test it. Instead of shrinking into a floating window, Maps should leave navigation running in the background without showing the mini navigation box. You may still see a regular navigation notification in the notification shade, which is separate from Picture-in-Picture and can be adjusted later if you want fewer alerts.

Alternative path through Special app access

Some Android versions organize PiP permissions in a separate system menu rather than inside the individual app page. If you cannot find the Picture-in-Picture option under Google Maps, try this route instead:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Choose Special app access. You may need to tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner to find it.
  4. Select Picture-in-picture.
  5. Tap Maps or Google Maps.
  6. Switch off Allow picture-in-picture.

The exact names can vary by phone maker. On Samsung Galaxy devices, look under Settings > Apps > Maps > Picture-in-picture, or use the Settings search bar and type picture-in-picture. On Pixel phones, the option is typically under Settings > Apps > Special app access > Picture-in-picture. On Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, and other Android phones, the fastest method is usually to search Settings for PiP or picture.

If the floating Maps popup still appears after disabling PiP, fully close Google Maps and reopen it before testing again. You can also force stop the app from Settings > Apps > Maps > Force stop. Then launch Maps, start navigation, and press Home. If PiP is disabled correctly, the floating mini-window should no longer appear when you leave the app.

How to Disable Google Maps Floating Overlay Permissions

If Google Maps is still appearing as a small floating window after you have turned off Picture-in-Picture, check whether Android has allowed Maps to display over other apps. This permission is usually called Display over other apps, Appear on top, or Draw over other apps, depending on your phone. When enabled, it can let an app place content above whatever else you are using, which may look like a persistent navigation bubble or floating panel.

On most Android phones, you can disable this permission from the app’s settings page:

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Go to Apps or Apps & notifications.
  3. Tap See all apps if your phone does not show the full list right away.
  4. Find and select Maps.
  5. Tap Advanced, Special app access, or Appear on top, depending on your device.
  6. Select Display over other apps or Appear on top.
  7. Turn off Allow display over other apps.

Samsung Galaxy phones often place this setting in a slightly different menu. Open Settings, then go to Apps, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, choose Special access, and open Appear on top. From there, find Maps and switch it off. On Google Pixel phones, the path is commonly Settings > Apps > Special app access > Display over other apps > Maps. Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, and Motorola phones may use similar wording, but the permission is still usually found under app access or special permissions.

What changes after turning this off

Disabling overlay access should stop Google Maps from placing a floating navigation element above other apps. You can still open Maps normally, search for places, start directions, and use turn-by-turn navigation inside the full Maps app. You may also still receive standard navigation notifications if those notification categories are enabled. This setting only targets floating content that appears on top of other apps; it does not uninstall Maps or remove location permissions.

  • Full-screen navigation: still works when Maps is open.
  • Voice directions: still work if sound is enabled in navigation settings.
  • Lock screen or notification shade controls: may still appear unless notification settings are changed separately.
  • Floating windows: should be blocked when overlay permission is off.

If you do not see an overlay permission for Google Maps, your phone may not grant Maps that type of access, or the popup you are seeing may be caused by Picture-in-Picture or navigation notifications instead. In that case, leave overlay access off where available, then check the PiP setting again and review the Maps notification categories. Some manufacturers also have their own floating window features, such as Smart pop-up view, Floating windows, or Sidebar; if Maps is added to one of those features, remove it there as well.

How to Reduce Google Maps Navigation Notifications

If you have already turned off Picture-in-Picture and floating overlay permissions, Google Maps may still feel intrusive because it can keep navigation controls in the notification shade, on the lock screen, or as heads-up alerts. These are separate from the small floating map window, so you may need to adjust notification settings as well. Reducing these alerts can stop Maps from repeatedly showing route progress, driving mode prompts, or turn-by-turn banners when you would rather keep navigation in the main app only.

Change Google Maps notification settings from Android Settings

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Tap Apps, then choose Maps. On some phones, you may need to tap See all apps first.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Look for categories related to navigation, such as Navigation, Navigation status, Directions, Driving mode, or Maps while navigating.
  5. Turn off the categories you do not want, or tap a category and set it to Silent instead of fully disabling it.

The exact category names vary by Android version, phone brand, and Google Maps version. Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, and Xiaomi devices may label the same controls differently. If you see a general All Maps notifications switch, avoid turning it off unless you are comfortable missing location sharing alerts, saved place updates, commute reminders, and other Maps messages. For most people, setting navigation-related notifications to Silent is a better balance because Maps can continue running in the background without pushing large banners or lock screen cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust alerts from a live Google Maps notification

You can also change the setting directly when the unwanted navigation notification appears. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification shade, then touch and hold the Google Maps notification. Tap Settings, Turn off notifications, or the gear icon, depending on your device. Android should take you to the exact notification category that produced the alert, which makes this method more precise than searching through the full app settings page.

  • To stop sound but keep route status: set the notification category to Silent.
  • To hide it from the lock screen: open the category and change Lock screen to Don’t show notifications or Hide content.
  • To stop pop-up banners: disable Pop on screen, Heads-up, or Show as pop-up if your phone offers that option.
  • To reduce vibration: turn off Vibrate within the navigation notification category.

Inside Google Maps, you can also reduce voice and alert behavior during an active route. Start navigation, tap the sound icon, and choose Muted or Alerts only. This does not remove Android system notifications by itself, but it can reduce the sense that Maps is constantly interrupting you. If you use Google Assistant Driving Mode, check Settings > Google > Settings for Google apps > Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant > Transportation or Driving mode, then turn off automatic launch options if they are enabled.

After changing notification settings, test with a short route. Start navigation, switch to another app, lock the phone, and then unlock it again. If the floating popup is gone but a Maps card still appears, the remaining behavior is likely a notification category rather than Picture-in-Picture or overlay access. Fine-tune that category until Maps stays available without taking over the screen.

What to Do If the Popup Keeps Coming Back

If Google Maps still opens a small floating navigation window after you turned off Picture-in-Picture, overlay access, or navigation notifications, the setting may not have applied cleanly, another Android feature may be restoring it, or Maps may still be running an active trip in the background. Start by fully ending the current navigation session. Open Google Maps, tap the active navigation card or banner, then tap Exit or Stop. After that, open the recent apps screen and swipe Google Maps away so it is no longer running in the background.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Next, force stop Maps and reopen it. Go to Settings > Apps > Maps > Force stop. This clears the current running session without deleting your saved places or account data. Then check the two main permissions again: Picture-in-picture and Appear on top, sometimes called Display over other apps. On many Android phones, these are in separate menus, so disabling one does not automatically disable the other.

Check for settings that can bring the popup back

  • Driving mode: Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then go to Settings > Navigation settings. Turn off driving-related assistant prompts or automatic driving mode options if they are available on your device.
  • Android Auto: If your phone connects to a car, Android Auto can restart a navigation session. Check Settings > Connected devices > Android Auto and review automatic launch settings.
  • Battery restrictions: Some phones aggressively restore app states after sleep. Try setting Maps to Optimized rather than unrestricted background use under Settings > Apps > Maps > Battery.
  • Notification categories: On Android, Maps can have separate channels for navigation, traffic, commute, and location sharing. Disable the specific navigation-related channels instead of only turning off general notifications.

If the popup started after an update, clear the app cache. Go to Settings > Apps > Maps > Storage > Clear cache. Avoid Clear storage unless you are comfortable resetting app preferences such as downloaded offline maps, recent searches, and some local settings. After clearing the cache, restart your phone and test Maps again by starting and stopping a short navigation route.

On Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, and other customized Android phones, the permission names may differ. Look for terms such as Floating windows, Pop-up view, Draw over other apps, Smart pop-up view, or Picture-in-picture. If Google Maps is listed in any of those menus, switch it off. Also check whether the popup is actually from another Google app, such as Assistant, Android Auto, or a launcher driving widget. If the problem continues after every setting is disabled, update Google Maps from the Play Store, restart the phone, and repeat the permission checks once more, since app updates can sometimes reset or relocate Android permission controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Google Maps floating navigation window the same as Picture-in-Picture?

In most cases, yes. When you leave Google Maps during active navigation, Android may shrink Maps into a small floating Picture-in-Picture window so directions stay visible. If you want to stop that behavior permanently, turn off Picture-in-Picture for Google Maps in Android’s app settings.

How do I close the Google Maps popup without ending my route?

You can usually drag the floating window to the bottom of the screen or tap it and use the close button if one appears. This dismisses the popup temporarily, but navigation may continue in the background and you may still hear voice directions or see notifications. To fully stop navigation, reopen Google Maps and tap the exit or stop button for the route.

Where is the setting to turn off Picture-in-Picture for Google Maps on Android?

Open Android Settings, go to Apps, select Google Maps, then look for Picture-in-picture under advanced or special app access settings. Turn off Allow picture-in-picture. The exact path can vary by phone, so you can also search Settings for “Picture-in-picture” and choose Maps from the list.

What should I do if Google Maps keeps popping up even after I disabled Picture-in-Picture?

Check whether Google Maps still has permission to appear on top of other apps by going to Settings, Apps, Special app access, then Display over other apps or Appear on top. Disable that permission for Maps if it is available. You should also force stop Maps, clear its cache, and make sure Android Auto, driving mode, or a connected car system is not restarting navigation automatically.

Can I stop the popup but keep Google Maps navigation notifications?

Yes. Disabling Picture-in-Picture stops the floating window, but Google Maps can still show turn-by-turn directions in the notification shade. If the notifications are too intrusive, open the Android notification settings for Google Maps and reduce or disable navigation-related notification categories instead of turning off all Maps alerts.

Bottom Line

If Google Maps keeps appearing as a floating navigation popup, the fastest fix is to dismiss it from the screen or stop navigation, but the longer-term solution is to disable Picture-in-Picture for Maps and review any overlay or notification permissions that may be bringing it back.

Start with the PiP setting, then check Maps notifications and “display over other apps” permissions if needed. If the popup still returns, update Google Maps, clear its cache, or restart your phone to reset any stuck navigation behavior.
