How to Turn Off Subtitles on a Panasonic TV Without the Remote

Work out whether the TV or a connected box is producing the captions, try the TV's own buttons, and use a model-matched remote with a CC button if the menu is out of reach.

Subtitles on a Panasonic TV come from one of two places: the TV itself (closed captions) or a device connected to it, such as a cable or satellite box. Which one it is decides where you turn them off. If your remote is missing, start with the controls on the TV cabinet. If those can’t navigate the menus, a model-matched replacement remote is the dependable fix.

Step 1: Work out what is producing the words

Switch to a different input or channel if you can. The result tells you where to look:

  • Captions appear on every input and channel: the TV’s own closed-caption setting is on. Go to Step 2.
  • Captions appear only on an HDMI input fed by a cable or satellite box: Panasonic says that for HDMI viewing, closed captions are controlled on the connected device, so they must be turned off on that box. Changing the TV’s setting will not help. Use the box’s own remote, its front-panel buttons, or its accessibility or caption settings.
  • Captions appear only in one streaming app or one disc: that is usually a subtitle track chosen in the app or player. Open its playback controls and set subtitles to Off.

Step 2: Use the buttons on the TV itself

Look for physical buttons or a small joystick on the TV’s cabinet, often under the bottom edge, at the back near a corner, or behind the logo panel. Panasonic’s support pages don’t document a single button sequence that works on every model, so what you can do depends on your set. If the controls offer a menu or settings function along with directional and select actions, you can reach the caption setting. If they only handle power, volume, channel and input, you can’t navigate the menus this way (see Step 4).

Once you’re in the menu, find Closed Captions, Captions or Accessibility and set the display or mode option to Off.

Step 3: Find the right menu path for your TV

Panasonic gives several different paths because menus vary by model generation. Follow only the one that matches what you see on screen, and don’t mix steps from different ones.

Path (Panasonic support guidance) Final setting
Setup > System > Closed Caption > Basic Selection / CC Mode Off
Setup > CC > Mode Off
Setup > Caption > Analog Closed Caption Off
Setup > Display Customization > Closed Caption > Mode Off

Newer sets use a different layout. Panasonic Europe’s manual for the CQE2U series places captions under System Settings > More… > Accessibility > Captions, where a Display switch controls them. The same manual also documents TV Settings > Closed Captions (Subtitle). It notes that captions only show when the appropriate caption setting is enabled, so turning the switch off is what removes them. This is an example for that platform, not proof that every Panasonic TV works this way.

Step 4: If you can’t operate the menu, get a compatible remote

Panasonic’s remote compatibility page lists replacement remotes by TV series and also lets you choose by key-button features. Many of the listed remotes have a dedicated CC button, which toggles captions without opening any menu.

  1. Find the full model number on the label on the back of the TV (it begins with letters such as TC- or TH- on many North American sets).
  2. Look up that model on Panasonic’s compatibility page and note the remote part numbers listed for your series.
  3. If you want the quickest route, pick one with a CC button.
  4. Buy by matching the full model number, not by how the remote looks. Part numbers and availability vary, and this guide can’t confirm stock for any seller.

When the new remote arrives, press CC, or open the menu and use the path from Step 3.

If the captions still show

  • Check the content. Panasonic notes that captions are available only for supported programming. A broadcast, stream or disc can carry its own subtitle track that is separate from the TV’s closed captions, or words burned into the picture that no setting can remove.
  • Recheck the source device. If the TV’s setting is already Off and words persist on HDMI, the box or player is generating them.
  • Confirm which menu you are in. Some TVs list both an analog closed-caption option and a newer captions or accessibility option. Set each one to Off.
