You can reduce shopping personalization in both services by changing memory settings—but neither service documents a universal shopping-only off switch. In ChatGPT, turn off Memory in Settings > Personalization > Memory, or choose Unpersonalized in a Temporary Chat before you send its first message. In Claude, pause account memory or turn it off for a new chat before sending its first message. These controls affect broader memory and context, not just shopping.
Turn off memory for ChatGPT Shopping Research
- Open ChatGPT Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Memory.
- Turn off the Memory control or controls available on your account. Labels and availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
- Run Shopping Research again. OpenAI says it still works without Memory, but recommendations have fewer personalized touches. OpenAI’s Shopping Research help identifies Memory as a way recommendations may be tailored.
Turning Memory off is not the same as deleting what is already stored. If you want to remove existing remembered details, review and clear saved memories separately. Turning off Memory does not delete past chats, and saved memories and their source chats may require separate review or deletion. See OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.

Use an unpersonalized ChatGPT conversation
- Start a new chat and select Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, choose Unpersonalized.
- Use that chat for your shopping request. OpenAI says this mode does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins for personalization, and Temporary Chats do not create or update memories while they remain temporary. Details are in OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account’s personalization and model-improvement settings.
Pause memory in Claude, or disable it for one chat
Pause memory across chats
Open Claude Settings and find Memory. Choose the pause control if you want Claude to retain existing memory but stop using it and creating new memories. Anthropic also provides a reset option, but reset permanently deletes memory; it is not equivalent to pausing. Consult Anthropic’s memory guidance for the current controls.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Turn memory off for a new chat
- Start a new chat.
- Open the + menu and select Memory to turn it off.
- Send your first message only after changing the setting. Anthropic says this per-chat control cannot be changed after the chat has started.
This chat remains in chat history. If you want a conversation that is not saved to memory or chat history, use Incognito mode where available. Incognito is a separate option, not simply another label for turning memory off.
Check other settings that can still shape recommendations
ChatGPT ads are separate from shopping recommendations
Ad personalization controls how ads are selected; it does not switch off personalized product recommendations. Turning off ad personalization does not remove ads. OpenAI says the ad controls are limited to eligible users and regions; its help page notes that personalized ads are not initially available in the EEA or Switzerland. See OpenAI’s ads help.

ChatGPT Search product results are distinct from Shopping Research
If you mean product results shown through ChatGPT Search rather than Shopping Research, OpenAI says the query and context—including Memory or Custom Instructions—can affect which results appear. Those product results are separate from ads. See OpenAI’s product-results help. Disabling Memory addresses one source of context, not necessarily every setting that could shape a response.

Claude account instructions are separate from memory
If Claude continues reflecting preferences after you pause memory or disable it for a chat, review Instructions for Claude in Settings. These instructions apply account-wide and can influence responses independently of memory. Anthropic explains them in its personalization guidance.

Choose the control that matches your goal
| Goal | ChatGPT | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Stop memory from shaping future chats | Turn off Memory in Settings > Personalization > Memory. | Pause Memory in Settings. |
| Keep memory generally, but limit one shopping chat | Start a Temporary Chat and select Unpersonalized before the first message. | Turn off Memory from the + menu in a new chat before the first message. |
| Delete existing memory | Clear saved memories separately; turning off Memory alone does not delete them or past chats. | Use reset only if you intend to permanently delete memory; pausing retains it. |
| Avoid saving the conversation to chat history | Temporary Chat remains temporary unless saved; if saved, it becomes a regular chat. | Use Incognito mode where available; per-chat memory-off chats remain in chat history. |
Why a setting may be missing
OpenAI says Memory controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Claude’s memory options also depend on availability: Anthropic documents paid-plan availability for past-chat search, enterprise-owner controls, and per-chat controls on web, desktop, and recent mobile apps. Labels may change, and an organization may manage some settings. Check the current Settings screen and workspace or organization policy if the described control is not present. Neither service’s cited help establishes a shopping-specific toggle that overrides all other personalization inputs.
