How to Turn Off Push Email on iPhone and Use Fetch New Data

Set an iPhone email account to Manual or a Fetch schedule, and learn how provider support and notification settings affect what you see.

To stop an iPhone from checking an email account with Push, open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data. Select the account and choose Manual if that option appears. You can instead choose a Fetch schedule for periodic checks. The controls available depend on the email provider.

Change the retrieval setting for an email account

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap Apps, then Mail.

  3. Tap Mail Accounts, then Fetch New Data. Apple describes this screen as the place to set a fetch schedule for email accounts in its iPhone Mail settings guide.

  4. Select the account you want to change. Choose Manual if available to check for new messages on demand, or choose an available Fetch frequency to have the iPhone check periodically. The exact per-account options may vary.

What Push, Fetch, and Manual mean

Setting When new mail is retrieved What to know
Push New mail can be delivered as it becomes available. Whether Push appears depends on the email service. Apple says an account defaults to Fetch when Push is unavailable.
Fetch schedule The iPhone checks at the selected interval. Use this for periodic checks rather than on-demand checking.
Automatically Apple says background downloading occurs only when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. This is not the same as Push. Apple’s guidance specifies this behavior for iOS 11 and later and iPadOS.
Manual Mail checks when you request it rather than on a set background schedule. Select it if you want to decide when to check for new messages.

Apple’s email troubleshooting guidance notes that Push is not available for every account. A missing Push option can therefore be expected, rather than evidence that a setting is broken. Changing retrieval behavior does not guarantee immediate delivery or a specific battery-life improvement.

  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).

Manual checking is separate from Mail notifications

Fetch New Data controls when Mail retrieves messages; it does not turn notification alerts, sounds, or badges on or off. To change alerts, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications, then choose an account.

If Push is missing or new messages do not appear

Check provider support

Available retrieval choices depend on the account service. For iCloud Mail, Apple’s iCloud Mail troubleshooting instructions say to enable Push and choose Automatically under Fetch. Apple also says Push can be used with one account at a time, so options may differ among accounts.

Check connectivity and account access

Take care before removing an account

If you consider changing account settings or deleting and adding the account again, first confirm your messages are available on the provider’s website or somewhere else. Apple warns that email previously downloaded to the device may be removed when account settings are changed or an account is deleted.
