Gmail has separate controls for Gemini and other Workspace-wide smart features, Gmail’s app-level smart features, and writing suggestions such as Smart Compose and Smart Reply. Choose the narrowest control that matches what you want to stop: turning off the broad Workspace setting can also disable AI and connected features outside Gmail.
Choose the setting that matches what you want to turn off

Turn off Gemini in Gmail and Workspace-wide smart features
On a computer, use Gmail’s settings to reach the Workspace-wide control:

- Open Gmail and select Settings, then See all settings.
- Under General, find Google Workspace smart features and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings.
- Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace, then save your changes.
Google’s Gmail AI Overview help identifies this as the setting that turns off AI-powered Workspace features such as Gemini in Gmail. Because it is broader than Gmail alone, it may also affect connected Workspace experiences, including Calendar-derived events and personalized search or suggestions in Workspace apps. On Android
In the Gmail app, tap Menu → Settings, choose the account, then under General tap Google Workspace smart features and uncheck Smart features in Google Workspace. Google notes that the control shown can depend on the app version and account. Google/Gmail Help

Turn off Gmail, Chat, and Meet app-level smart features
This is a separate control from the Workspace-wide setting. In Gmail on a computer, go to Settings → See all settings → General, find the smart-features section, and untick Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. The change governs app-level experiences such as automatic email categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and Gmail summary cards. Google says this preference applies across devices and apps where you are signed in. Google/Gmail Help
Google also describes a distinct Smart features in other Google products setting. It controls the use of Workspace data for experiences in other Google products, with examples such as Maps or Wallet for personal accounts. Other products may have additional controls. Google/Gmail Help

Limit writing assistance without disabling everything
Turn off Smart Compose or its personalization
For a narrower change, open Gmail on a computer and go to Settings → See all settings → General. Find Smart Compose to turn its suggestions off. Google also provides a separate Smart Compose personalization setting: turn personalization off if you want generic suggestions rather than suggestions based on your writing style. Google says the Smart Compose preference is account-level and changes apply on devices signed into that account. Google/Gmail Help
Turn off Smart Reply
Smart Reply has its own setting in Gmail’s General settings. It controls short, pre-written reply suggestions. Do not confuse those with Gemini’s longer Suggested Replies, which are a separate Gemini feature. Google/Gmail Help

If a setting is missing or the change does not appear
- Check your account and rollout. Gemini features vary by account type, plan, platform, region, and rollout. Some require an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan; personal-account access may depend on Workspace Experiments or current rollout. Google’s availability page says personal Gmail access without a paid plan is currently limited to the US; check its live feature table for feature-specific language and platform availability. - Check Gmail’s app version. Google says labels and controls may vary. Some changes made on a computer may not be reflected in the mobile app; update Gmail if the app does not show a change notification. Google/Gmail Help
- Confirm which setting you changed. The Gmail, Chat, and Meet control and the Workspace-wide control are separate. Changing one does not substitute for changing the other.
