Use the power-off slider to shut down a responsive iPhone. If it is frozen and you can’t use the screen, force restart it with the button sequence for your model: Face ID models use Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Side; iPhone 7 models use Side and Volume Down; iPhone 6s and earlier use Home and Side or Top.
How do I turn off my iPhone?
These normal shutdown methods require a responsive screen. Apple documents the following options in its iPhone on/off guide.

Use the buttons
- iPhone with Face ID: Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until the sliders appear. Drag the Power Off slider.
- iPhone with a Home button: Press and hold the Side button until the sliders appear, then drag the Power Off slider.
Use Settings
- Open Settings and tap General.
- Scroll down and tap Shut Down.
- Drag the Power Off slider.
Use Control Center
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the power control in the top-right corner.
- Drag the Power Off slider.
To turn the iPhone back on, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. See Apple’s restart instructions.

A force restart is for an iPhone that is not responding and cannot be turned off and back on normally. It is a restart, not a factory reset; Apple’s steps do not instruct you to erase the device. Follow the sequence for your model, and keep holding the final button until the Apple logo appears. Apple’s force-restart guide covers the current Face ID sequence, and its restart instructions cover older model groups.

iPhone with Face ID
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears, then release them.
iPhone 6s and earlier
Press and hold the Home button and the Side button or Top button together until the Apple logo appears, then release them.

What should I do if my iPhone is still frozen or will not turn on?
If the force-restart sequence does not bring the phone back, use Apple’s troubleshooting guidance rather than relying on a normal slider shutdown that you cannot operate. For an iPhone that will not turn on, Apple advises charging it for one hour and trying again. Use a cable and power adapter compatible with your iPhone’s connector; charging is for a phone that will not power on, not a prerequisite for force restart.
