You can usually stop optional app-to-cloud sharing without turning off a drone’s required tracking—but there is no universal “location sharing” switch. On supported DJI consumer setups, review privacy settings and use Local Data Mode (LDM) to disconnect the flight app from the internet. Do not disable or interfere with a required Remote ID broadcast. The exact controls depend on your aircraft, controller, app version and country.
First identify which kind of location data you want to stop
“Location sharing” can refer to several separate things: optional flight-log synchronization to a company’s cloud, an app’s location check for maps or geofencing, the phone’s location permission, or a local Remote ID broadcast. Turning off one does not necessarily turn off the others.

| Control or data flow | What it affects | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Flight-log or media synchronization | Optional transfer from the flight app to a cloud service, where available | Review the app’s privacy settings and synchronization controls. |
| App internet access | Connection to cloud-dependent app services | For supported DJI consumer setups, Local Data Mode disconnects the flight app from the internet. |
| Phone or tablet location permission | Whether the app can use the device’s location | Check the exact controller and aircraft requirements before changing this permission. |
| Remote ID broadcast | Local broadcast of identification and location information when required | Keep required Remote ID functioning; it is distinct from cloud synchronization. |
Turn off optional sharing in the DJI Fly app
DJI’s consumer privacy guide says flight logs, images and video are optional and are not collected by default in the described setup. It directs users to the app’s Settings to change privacy preferences. The guide also says Sync Flight Data is no longer available in the United States, so the control or wording you see may depend on your region and app release. - Open DJI Fly and go to Settings.
- Review the available privacy permissions and any flight-log synchronization setting. Turn off only the optional sharing you do not want.
- If you want to disconnect the flight app from DJI’s cloud, go to Settings > Notification and Privacy > Local Data Mode and turn it on. Menu labels can vary by app release.
DJI describes LDM as disconnecting the flight app from the internet, which disables app features that require a connection to DJI’s cloud platform. For fully offline use, DJI says to turn off Wi-Fi and cellular connections on the mobile device as well. Offline app operation is not the same as disabling a local Remote ID broadcast.

Understand the activation location check and its trade-off
DJI says activation requires an email address, password and drone serial number. For relevant maps and geofencing data, it describes an approximate location check at activation; the guide says users can opt out of that safety feature by using Local Data Mode. DJI says it applies a random offset within a 5–10 km radius to this check and that the data is temporary and not stored on DJI servers. Those details are DJI’s own description of its process, not an independent verification, and the offset is not a general anonymity guarantee or a measure of Remote ID accuracy. Source: DJI Trust Center consumer privacy guide.
Because LDM disconnects internet-dependent app functions, consider whether you need connected services such as cloud connectivity, map data or geofencing updates before enabling it. DJI’s guide does not apply to users in China; users there should consult the applicable local guidance and current DJI documentation.

The built-in battery does not need to be replaced and can be charged directly by plugging it into the Type-C charging cable included in the package.
Keep location permission when your controller needs it for Remote ID
Do not revoke your phone’s location permission just because you have turned off optional cloud sharing. DJI says some controller configurations without integrated GNSS need a connected phone or tablet with integrated GNSS as the location source for Remote ID. For those configurations, DJI says to keep DJI Fly in the foreground during flight and allow it to obtain location. Other listed controller and goggle configurations have integrated GNSS. Check the current instructions for your exact setup before changing device permissions. Source: DJI Support Remote ID FAQ.

In the United States, the FAA defines Remote ID as a drone’s ability to provide identification and location information receivable by other people through a broadcast signal. DJI says its compliant Remote ID system cannot be manually disabled when using compliant firmware. Do not disable, spoof or obstruct required Remote ID to prevent the broadcast. FAA guidance describes Standard Remote ID drones and broadcast modules as compliance routes, and permits operation without Remote ID equipment in an FAA-recognized identification area where applicable. A module is not a universal fix: verify that it is accepted and compatible with your aircraft, and check current registration and operating requirements with the FAA. Outside the United States, use the relevant aviation regulator’s rules.

- Identify the exact data flow you want to stop: cloud sync, an activation or app location check, phone permission, or a broadcast.
- Review the flight app’s privacy settings and disable only optional synchronization or sharing you do not want.
- If using a supported DJI consumer setup and you need the flight app offline, enable LDM using the app path above; account for the loss of internet-dependent features.
- Check the aircraft, controller and app instructions for whether device location access is needed for Remote ID. Keep that access if the configuration requires it.
- Confirm that any required Remote ID system remains operational and check the current rules for the country where you will fly.
These DJI menu instructions are examples, not universal drone settings. For a different brand—or a model, controller or app version that does not match the description—consult its current manual and the applicable aviation regulator before changing permissions or connectivity.
