To disable motion blur or chromatic aberration, open the game’s Settings or Options and check its Video, Graphics, Visuals, or Post-Processing menu. Turn each effect off separately if the game provides separate controls, then apply or save the change. Menu names and options vary by game, so there is no universal set of clicks or setting that every PC game includes.
Where to find the settings
- Open the game’s Settings or Options menu. Some games make these controls available from the title screen rather than during gameplay.
- Check sections named Video, Graphics, Visuals, or Post-Processing.
- Set Motion Blur to Off. Look separately for Chromatic Aberration and switch it off if available. If the game offers Off, Low, or High, choose Off to disable the effect.
- Apply or save the change. If the image does not update immediately, return to gameplay; restart only if the game requests it.
The controls can be separate, bundled with another visual setting, or absent. For example, EA’s Jedi: Fallen Order PC visual-settings page documents individual Motion Blur and Chromatic Aberration switches. Capcom’s Street Fighter IV PC manual directs players from the title screen or Main menu to Options > PC settings and lists Motion Blur among its graphics controls.

What turning the effects off changes
Motion blur
Motion blur adds blur when the camera or objects move rapidly. Its appearance and implementation differ between games; NVIDIA’s Witcher 3 settings guide, for example, describes that game’s motion blur as velocity-based. Turning it off may make movement look clearer to players who dislike the effect, but it also changes the presentation chosen by the developer.
Chromatic aberration
Chromatic aberration is a visual color effect. EA describes the Jedi: Fallen Order control as color correcting on various focal planes; NVIDIA’s Witcher 3 guide treats it as an optional effect in that game. Those descriptions are examples, not universal definitions of how every game implements the setting. Disable it if you prefer the image without that effect.

Will disabling them improve performance?
Do not assume either change will produce a noticeable frame-rate increase. NVIDIA’s Witcher 3 guide says Blur and Motion Blur together appeared to cost a few frames per second in a fight, and reports Chromatic Aberration at an average of 0.3 frames per second across multiple tests. Those are measurements for that game and NVIDIA’s testing conditions, not general benchmarks for other games or PCs. Treat these options primarily as visual preferences.
If there is no toggle in the menu
- Check the exact game’s official documentation, patch notes, or support page. The setting may be in a different menu, bundled into a broader post-processing control, or available through a launcher.
- Do not assume a Steam launch option will work. Steam explains that launch options can supersede internal game settings, but its listed common options apply to GoldSrc and Source games, not most third-party games. There is no universal Steam flag for disabling these effects. See Steam Support’s launch-options guidance.
- Use a configuration-file edit only with reliable, game- and version-specific instructions. A recipe for another game or engine is not a safe substitute. Back up the original file before changing it; edits can be overwritten by the game or an update, and may cause visual or startup problems. Undo the change if the game behaves unexpectedly.
Community instructions can become stale: Steam currently marks a March 27, 2025 Drive Beyond Horizons configuration guide as removed and incompatible with the game. That is a reason to verify any community recipe before using it, not a recommendation to follow that guide. Steam’s general performance guidance also notes that results vary between machines and directs players to game-specific support for help.
