The command you need
Minecraft’s normal control for natural mob spawning is a Boolean gamerule. Set it to false to stop the relevant spawning behavior and set it back to true to restore it.

The capitalization is significant on Java. Bedrock documents the rule name in lowercase as domobspawning. A command can be accepted in one edition and rejected in the other if you use the wrong spelling.
What “mob spawning” means
The gamerule primarily controls natural spawning: the game’s normal attempts to create mobs as part of world simulation. Microsoft describes Bedrock’s domobspawning rule as controlling whether mobs spawn into the game and, in its API reference, as controlling whether mobs spawn naturally in the world.

Turning the rule off is therefore a targeted change, not a universal “remove every mob” switch. Animals, monsters, and other entities that are already loaded can remain. A player can still create entities through some other mechanisms, depending on edition and version.
- Existing mobs are not necessarily killed when the rule changes.
- Commands such as
/summonare separate from natural spawning. - Spawn eggs and mob spawners can follow their own rules.
- Some entities created by structures or special game mechanics may not be governed exactly like ordinary natural spawns.
If your requirement is “no hostile monsters under any circumstance,” disabling natural spawning alone may not meet it. Remove existing entities separately and decide whether you also need to restrict commands, eggs, spawners, or structure-generated entities.

1. Confirm command permission
You must be an operator or otherwise have permission to use gamerules. On a dedicated server, an operator can grant permission from the server console with the server’s normal operator command. On a single-player world, cheats must be enabled for commands to work. If the server uses a management panel, its console may provide an equivalent command entry field.
2. Run the Java gamerule
Enter this in chat while in the target world, or submit it through the server console:
/gamerule doMobSpawning false
Use the command in the world or dimension where you want the rule changed. Gamerules are saved with a world; changing one world does not automatically change every other world, instance, or dimension managed by a hosting setup.
3. Check the current value
In Java releases that support querying a gamerule without a value, run:
/gamerule doMobSpawning
The server should return the current Boolean value. If that query syntax is not accepted by your release or command interface, inspect the world’s available gamerules or use the command suggestions shown after typing /gamerule. A successful change should also produce the normal command feedback for your permissions and release.

4. Restore spawning later
To return to the default natural-spawning behavior, run:
/gamerule doMobSpawning true
Restoring the rule permits future natural-spawn attempts; it does not guarantee that mobs appear immediately. Spawn conditions, light, nearby players, mob caps, valid blocks, and the dimension still determine whether a particular attempt succeeds.
Java 1.21.9 and later: do not rely on the old server property
Java server configuration changed in version 1.21.9. Mojang’s release notes say the spawn-monsters server property was removed in favor of the new spawnMonsters game rule. Tutorials that tell you to edit spawn-monsters in server.properties are therefore not valid instructions for that release and later versions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The practical rule is to identify the exact Java release before editing a configuration file. For common versions, the natural-spawning command remains:
/gamerule doMobSpawning false
For a 1.21.9-or-newer server, use the release’s in-game command suggestions and current rule list to verify the available names, particularly if you are trying to control only monsters rather than all natural mob spawning. Do not assume that a property copied from an older server installation still exists. A removed property may be ignored, rejected, or leave the world unchanged while the gamerule continues to control behavior.
If a panel exposes both server properties and gamerules, treat them as separate layers. A property editor can contain legacy fields that no longer affect the running version; the authoritative control is the gamerule recognized by that release.
Bedrock Edition: disable spawning step by step
1. Use a permitted world
You need the world permissions required to run commands. Depending on whether you are hosting locally, on a Realm, or on a dedicated Bedrock server, this may mean enabling cheats or assigning an operator-level role. The command must be run in the intended world.

2. Set the lowercase rule
Run:
/gamerule domobspawning false
Bedrock defines domobspawning as a Boolean gamerule. The valid values are true and false; do not use Java’s camel-case spelling.
3. Re-enable natural spawning
When you want ordinary spawning back, run:
/gamerule domobspawning true
As on Java, this changes future natural-spawn processing. It does not promise that existing entities disappear or that a new mob will spawn immediately after the value changes.
Choosing between a gamerule and Peaceful difficulty
Use the gamerule when you want a narrow spawning change while leaving the world’s difficulty setting intact. Use Peaceful difficulty when you want the broader Peaceful ruleset and accept its other effects.
| Approach | Scope | What it changes | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
doMobSpawning false (Java common releases) |
Natural spawning control | Stops ordinary natural-spawn attempts governed by this rule | Does not necessarily remove existing, summoned, egg-created, spawner-created, or structure-related entities |
domobspawning false (Bedrock) |
Natural spawning control | Sets Bedrock’s documented Boolean rule for whether mobs spawn into the game | Does not necessarily remove entities created through separate mechanics |
/difficulty peaceful |
Entire difficulty system | Prevents monsters and applies the other survival behavior associated with Peaceful | It is not equivalent to a narrow gamerule toggle and may change more of the world than intended |
Peaceful is appropriate for a world that should behave as a Peaceful world. It is a poor substitute when you only want to pause natural spawning for a build, event, classroom, or technical test while preserving the selected difficulty.
Why mobs may still be present after you turn spawning off
Entities that already spawned
The gamerule changes spawning decisions; it is not a cleanup command. Hostile mobs in caves, animals in pens, villagers, and other entities that existed before the change can remain until they die, despawn under their normal rules, or are removed by another action.
For a controlled cleanup, target only the entities you intend to remove. A broad kill command can destroy pets, livestock, villagers, armor stands, or other entities that your players need, so choose selectors carefully and test in a copy or disposable area before using them on a live world.
Summoning and commands
A player or command block with permission may be able to create an entity with /summon even when natural spawning is disabled. Preventing that requires permission control, command-block policy, or a separate administrative rule; changing the natural-spawn gamerule does not by itself revoke command access.

Spawn eggs
Spawn eggs are an intentional player action rather than a natural-spawn attempt. If players can access them in the relevant mode or inventory, they may still create mobs. Restrict the items or the players who can use them if a truly mob-free area is required.
Spawners
Mob spawners are block-based mechanisms with behavior distinct from ordinary world spawning. Depending on edition, version, and the spawner’s conditions, disabling natural spawning may not be the correct control for them. Secure, remove, disable, or relocate the spawner when it is the source of the entities.
Structures and special generation
Some mobs are associated with structures, events, or other generation mechanics. Edition and version differences matter, so do not promise that a single gamerule suppresses every structure-related entity. If a raid, fortress, trial, or other feature is the problem, identify that feature’s own trigger and address it directly.
Applying the rule to a server console or control panel
The underlying Minecraft command is the same whether you type it in chat or through a server console, but the interface changes. Many consoles expect the command without the leading slash, while in-game chat normally uses the slash. Follow the panel’s command format and confirm that it is connected to the correct server and world.

- Open the live console, command field, or in-game operator chat for the intended instance.
- Submit the edition-appropriate gamerule command.
- Read the returned success or error message instead of assuming that a panel button saved the value.
- Reconnect or reload only if the panel or server version requires it; a gamerule command normally takes effect as soon as it is accepted.
- After a restart, query the gamerule again in the same world to verify persistence.
A configuration panel may present a friendly checkbox, but it can map to a version-specific setting. If the checkbox and the in-game rule disagree, trust the command result for the running version and check whether the panel is writing a removed or legacy property.

- World scope: Gamerules are stored with world data. A command issued in one saved world does not automatically alter a different world selected by the server.
- Dimension scope: Test the dimension in which players are seeing the problem. A server may route commands through a console while the rule is being inspected in another world context.
- Restart persistence: Gamerules normally persist as part of the world save. Verify after a restart rather than relying on a panel’s displayed value.
- Backups: Back up the world before bulk entity removal or major configuration changes. A gamerule toggle is reversible; accidental deletion of entities may not be.
Troubleshooting rejected or ineffective commands
“Unknown or incomplete command”
Check the edition first. Java expects doMobSpawning in the common command; Bedrock expects domobspawning. Also verify that you included a space before false or true and did not paste smart quotation marks or extra punctuation.
“You do not have permission”
Grant the appropriate operator or command permission, enable cheats where that is required, or ask the server administrator to run the command. A console account and an in-game account may have different permission levels.

The command succeeds but mobs continue appearing
Determine whether the entities are newly spawned naturally or were already present. Watch a previously empty, valid spawning area after setting the rule, then inspect for spawners, spawn eggs, commands, structure mechanics, or a different world. Existing entities require separate cleanup if you want the area visibly empty.
The old server.properties setting has no effect
On Java 1.21.9 and later, Mojang removed the spawn-monsters server property in favor of the spawnMonsters game rule. Remove the legacy setting from your troubleshooting assumptions and use the current release’s recognized gamerules.
Spawning returns after a restart
Confirm that the command was run in the saved world, not a temporary instance, and that a startup script or management panel is not replacing the world or applying another configuration. Query the rule after the restart and record the exact value and server version for the administrator.
Practical decision guide
You are building in a survival world
Use the edition-specific gamerule so the difficulty and other survival systems remain unchanged. Remove only the mobs already in the construction area if necessary.
You are hosting a permanently peaceful map
Use /difficulty peaceful when the goal is the full Peaceful experience, not merely a pause in natural spawning. Tell players that this changes broader difficulty behavior.
You are running an event or recording session
Use the gamerule for a reversible, narrow change. Keep a written restore command—/gamerule doMobSpawning true for common Java releases or /gamerule domobspawning true for Bedrock—so the server can return to normal after the session.
You need a completely empty arena
Combine the gamerule with a carefully scoped cleanup of existing entities and controls for commands, eggs, spawners, and event mechanics. No single natural-spawn toggle guarantees that every possible entity source is disabled.
