To hide chat in Minecraft, use the setting for your edition: in Java Edition, go to Options → Chat Settings → Chat mode → Hidden. In Bedrock Edition, open in-game chat settings and turn on Mute All Chat. Java’s option is documented by Minecraft; the Bedrock menu details come from a community-maintained reference and may vary by device or version.
Hide chat in Java Edition
- Open Minecraft: Java Edition and select Options.
- Select Chat Settings.
- Set Chat mode to Hidden.
Minecraft Help says that Hidden “Hides all chat messages.” The same menu offers three modes:

Choose Commands Only if you want to remove player chat but still see command messages. Settings such as text opacity and chat-box dimensions change chat’s appearance, not whether chat is shown.

- Open the in-game chat.
- Open the chat settings button.
- Turn on Mute All Chat.
A separate Mute Emote Chat option is described for emote messages. The reference describes Mute All Chat as controlling whether chat messages appear on the HUD. Because that information comes from a community-maintained Minecraft Wiki page, labels and placement may differ across versions and devices. If you do not see the controls, confirm that you are using Bedrock and look in the settings opened from in-game chat.

Open chat on your device
Minecraft’s controls guide lists these default ways to open chat:
- Keyboard: press T.
- Controller: press right on the D-pad.
- Touchscreen: tap the speech-bubble button.
Controls can be customized in the game’s options, so your configured button may differ.

Chat visibility is different from communication permissions
Hiding messages changes what you see; it does not by itself change who is allowed to communicate with an account. For a child account, Minecraft says chat access can be managed through Xbox privacy and online-safety settings or the Xbox Family app. After changing child-account settings in the family app, Minecraft instructs users to sign out of the game and restart it for the new permissions to take effect.
Minecraft’s child-safety guidance also says the Bedrock profanity filter is enabled by default and cannot be turned off for a signed-in child account. That filter is for content, not a replacement for hiding chat or restricting communication access.

If chat still appears
- Check the edition and setting: Java uses Chat mode → Hidden; Bedrock uses Mute All Chat in chat settings.
- The Bedrock reference does not establish that the mute control behaves identically on every server, plugin, or cross-play setup. If messages persist, check the server’s own chat controls and note your edition and version.
- If the issue is that you cannot send messages or account permissions seem wrong, inspect Microsoft/Xbox privacy controls separately and restart Minecraft after changing account settings.
Why the /hud command is not the usual fix
Bedrock has a /hud command that can hide or reset HUD elements, but Microsoft documents it as requiring cheats. It affects broader HUD elements and is a world-level control, so use the ordinary chat setting when the goal is simply to remove chat from your screen.
