To hide the red number on an iPhone app icon without stopping its other notifications, open Settings > Notifications, select the app, and switch off Badges. Leave Allow Notifications on to keep the app’s other notification options available.
Turn off the badge for one app
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Choose the app whose icon badge you want to hide.
- Switch off Badges. Keep Allow Notifications on if you still want the app’s other notifications.
Apple lists badge display separately from notification alerts and sounds in its iPhone notification settings instructions. Disabling Badges hides the app-icon indicator; it does not, by itself, disable banners, sounds, or Lock Screen alerts.
Choose which notifications remain
If you want to remove only the red number, change Badges and leave the rest of the app’s notification settings as they are. To stop the app’s notifications altogether, turn off Allow Notifications instead. You can also review alert placement and sounds individually in that app’s notification settings.

Hide badges in the App Library
If a badge still appears in the App Library, open Settings > Home Screen & App Library and check Show in App Library. This is a separate control from the per-app Badges setting. Apple explains App Library options in its guide to finding and using apps in the App Library.
Change icon appearance separately
Home Screen icon appearance and notification badges are different settings. To adjust icon appearance, touch and hold the Home Screen background until the icons jiggle, tap Edit, then tap Customize. Apple’s Home Screen customization guidance covers the available appearance and tint controls; changing them does not turn badges on or off.

How Mail’s unread badge count works
Mail has an additional badge-count choice. In iOS 18.2, when Mail categories are enabled, the Home Screen badge shows unread messages in the Primary category by default. To include unread messages across categories, open Settings > Apps > Mail > Notifications, tap Customize Notifications, then choose All Unread Messages under Badge Count. This behavior depends on the iOS version and Mail category settings. See Apple’s Mail notification instructions.
