To disable the Hyper-V hypervisor in Windows 11, open Control Panel → Programs and Features → Turn Windows features on or off, expand Hyper-V → Hyper-V Platform, clear Hyper-V Hypervisor, and apply the change. Restart if prompted. If you need to change whether the hypervisor starts at boot—or remove the broader Hyper-V feature set—use the separate options below; they do different things.
Choose what you need to turn off
Windows exposes separate controls for the Hyper-V hypervisor component, its startup behavior, and the broader Hyper-V feature set. The component and boot-setting changes are not the same as removing all Hyper-V features.

| Method | What it changes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Features, PowerShell, or DISM | Disables the Hyper-V hypervisor component. | You want to turn off the hypervisor component through Windows feature controls. Microsoft documents these methods. |
| BCDEdit boot setting | Prevents the hypervisor from launching at boot; a restart is required. | You need to change boot behavior or investigate why the hypervisor still starts. Microsoft documents the setting. |
| Full Hyper-V feature removal | Removes Hyper-V from the available optional features and, in Microsoft’s procedure, also turns off boot launch. | You no longer need the broader Hyper-V feature set. See Microsoft’s procedure; its article covers workstation-class computers and Windows Server, and Windows 11 editions may not expose identical feature controls. |
Disable the Hyper-V hypervisor in Windows Features
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Hyper-V, then expand Hyper-V Platform.
- Clear the Hyper-V Hypervisor checkbox and apply the change.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then verify the result in System Information.
This changes the hypervisor component, rather than removing the broader Hyper-V optional feature set.
Use PowerShell or DISM instead
Run one of these commands in an elevated console. The PowerShell command belongs in an administrative PowerShell session; the DISM command belongs in an administrative Command Prompt.

PowerShell
Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-Hypervisor
Command Prompt
DISM /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V-Hypervisor
Both commands disable the Hyper-V hypervisor component. Restart if Windows requests one, then check System Information.
Stop the hypervisor from launching at boot
In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
bcdedit /set {current} hypervisorlaunchtype off
Microsoft defines {current} as the current boot entry and requires a restart for boot-option changes to take effect. If you run the command in PowerShell, quote the boot entry identifier:

bcdedit /set "{current}" hypervisorlaunchtype off
To restore automatic launch, use the value Auto:
bcdedit /set {current} hypervisorlaunchtype auto
This changes boot behavior; it does not uninstall Hyper-V.

Remove the broader Hyper-V feature set

Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-All
bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off
The first command removes Hyper-V from the available optional features; the second prevents it from running at boot. Microsoft’s guidance is for workstation-class computers and also discusses Windows Server management. Feature controls can vary by Windows 11 edition, so do not assume every edition presents the same options.

- Search Windows for
msinfo32.exeand open System Information. - Inspect the Details pane for Microsoft’s indicator: “A hypervisor has been detected. Features required for Hyper-V will not be displayed.”
If that message remains after a restart, Hyper-V-dependent security features may also be active. Microsoft identifies Memory Integrity and Credential Guard as relevant features; their settings may be managed through Intune, Group Policy, or registry entries. On a work- or school-managed device, ask your administrator to review the configuration rather than overriding organizational policy.

Why a virtualization app may behave differently
Microsoft explains that virtualization applications rely on hardware virtualization extensions and that the hardware cannot be shared by multiple software components at once. As a result, another virtualization app may fail to start a virtual machine or use a slower emulated mode when Hyper-V or dependent features are active. Microsoft describes this compatibility behavior as by design in its virtualization compatibility guidance.

Disabling the hypervisor can also affect Windows security features that depend on it, including Memory Integrity and Credential Guard. Consider that trade-off before changing a managed or security-configured PC.
