To stop a particular Google Maps alert, open Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then go to Settings > Notifications. Choose the notification category and turn off the alert you no longer want. To block all Maps notifications, use your phone’s system settings; the controls differ between Android and iPhone or iPad.
Turn off a specific notification in Google Maps
Maps lets you control notification types separately, so you can stop one kind of alert without disabling every Maps notification. The in-app route is the same on Android and iPhone or iPad:

- Open the Google Maps app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then Notifications.
- Open the relevant category and switch off the notification you want to stop.
For example, if you only want to stop traffic alerts, look for the relevant traffic notification in the categories and turn that off. The category names available can depend on the alert and your app.

Block Google Maps notifications in your phone settings
iPhone and iPad
To stop notifications from Maps at the iOS level, open the iPhone or iPad Settings app and go to Notifications > Google Maps. Change Allow Notifications. This is an app-wide control rather than a control for one Maps notification category.

Android
Android also provides system-level notification controls for apps, but the route and menu names vary by device and Android version. Google Maps’ in-app Settings > Notifications categories are the clearest common way to disable an individual alert. Android may also expose separate notification-channel controls for certain Maps alerts, including some proactive traffic updates when Maps is not in use.
Proactive traffic updates are available only in some countries and regions. Google says they require the relevant Maps notification to be enabled, along with physical activity and location permissions. If you are trying to stop these updates, check the corresponding Maps notification category or channel rather than assuming every Android device has the same menu.

Choose between one alert and all Maps alerts

Take care with Location Sharing notifications
There are two different kinds of shared-location alerts, and they have different consequences.
Updates for your own shared location
Google Maps has a notification related to Google Location Sharing (you). Google warns that turning this notification off stops shared-location refreshes and can make your shared location inaccurate. If other people rely on seeing your current location, consider leaving this notification on rather than treating it as an ordinary alert.

Arrival or departure alerts for someone else’s shared location
If you receive alerts when another person arrives at or leaves a place, the control is separate from the regular Maps notification categories. Google says you can turn these off in your Google Account’s Location Sharing settings by switching off Allow Location Sharing notifications. This stops those alerts; it is not the same as ending location sharing. Google also says the alerts stop when sharing itself stops.

- Check which control you changed. A category switch affects that type of Maps notification; the iOS Allow Notifications switch is app-wide.
- On Android, look for a channel or device-specific control. Android menu names differ, and some alerts have channel-level settings.
- For shared-location alerts, use the matching control. Your own location-update notice and alerts about someone else’s arrivals or departures are managed separately.
- If a label does not match, check the current app and operating-system menus. Google’s help pages do not show a publication date, and device menus can vary.
