To turn off Google’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP) before a planned reset, remove your Google Account from the Galaxy in Settings, then reset the device from Settings. If the phone has already been reset and requests verification, sign in with a Google Account previously added and synced to that phone—or use the previous screen lock if the option appears.
What “Google lock” means on a Samsung
“Google lock” usually refers to Factory Reset Protection (FRP), also called Google Device Protection. Samsung describes FRP as “a security feature designed to help protect your device if it is lost or stolen.” It can require verification after a reset to show that the person setting up the phone is authorized. It is different from the screen lock used to unlock the phone during normal use.

Google says a protected device may ask for its screen unlock or for a Google Account previously added and synced to it. The exact prompts can vary by device and software version. See Google’s Android device-protection guidance and Samsung’s factory-reset and FRP guidance.

If you can still open the phone: remove the account before resetting
Removing the Google Account from the Galaxy turns off device protection for that device. This removes the account from the phone; it does not delete the Google Account itself. Menu names and locations vary by model, software version, and region, so use the closest matching options if your screen differs.

- Back up anything you want to keep. A factory reset erases personal data stored on the device.
- Open Settings > Accounts and backup, then open account management. Select the Google Account you want to remove and choose Remove account. Confirm if prompted. Samsung’s account-removal instructions are available in its Google account removal guide.
- If you are resetting the Galaxy, go to Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset, review the information, and complete the prompts.
Removing the account before handing off or wiping the phone is the key step. Google states that removing the account turns off device protection; Samsung notes that resetting by a method other than Factory data reset in Settings may trigger FRP. A reset through Recovery or with hardware buttons can therefore lead to a different verification experience. For details, consult Google’s device-protection page and Samsung’s reset guidance.
If the phone is already asking for Google verification
At the verification screen, use a Google Account that was previously added and synced to that Galaxy. A guest account will not satisfy the requirement. If setup offers verification with a previous screen lock, enter the screen lock that was used before the reset. Which options appear depends on the device and software version.

- Try the previously synced Google Account and its current password.
- If you cannot remember the account or password, use Google Account recovery, then return to device setup.
- If you recently changed the password, allow time before trying the new one on the reset phone. Samsung says a 24-hour cooldown may apply.
- If you still cannot verify ownership, contact Samsung Support or an authorized service center. Samsung’s guidance recommends bringing proof of purchase.
A second reset, a cable, or an unofficial “FRP bypass” tool is not a supported way to remove the ownership check. Samsung’s regional guidance is available from Samsung US, Samsung Canada, and Samsung UK.

Which situation are you in?
| Situation | What to do | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| You can access Settings and have not reset the phone | Back up data, remove the Google Account in Settings, then reset from Settings if needed. | The factory reset erases personal data. |
| The phone has already been reset and asks for verification | Use a previously synced Google Account or a prior screen lock if offered; recover the account if needed. | Another reset does not establish ownership. |
| You cannot verify with available credentials | Recover the Google Account or contact Samsung or an authorized service center. | Bring proof of purchase where applicable; a recent password change may involve a 24-hour wait. |
Before handing over a Galaxy
- Back up important data before erasing the phone.
- Remove the Google Account in Settings while you can still access the device.
- Use the Settings factory-reset option rather than a Recovery or button-based reset when preparing the phone for someone else.
- If the phone is already reset, be ready to verify with an account previously synced to it.
