You can exit Chrome’s current full-screen mode, but Google’s consumer help pages do not document a permanent-off switch for ordinary users. On Windows or Linux, press F11; on Mac, press Fn+f or press and hold Esc. These shortcuts exit the current state; they do not disable fullscreen or prevent it from being turned on again. On an organization-managed device, an administrator can control fullscreen with Chrome’s Fullscreen mode policy.
First identify which kind of fullscreen you’re seeing
Chrome’s window can enter fullscreen, hiding browser controls such as the tabs and address bar. Separately, a website or web app can request fullscreen for its own content, such as a video or game. The right fix depends on which one happened: leaving fullscreen exits the current state, while preventing future use requires a different control.

For a site’s content, the browser’s Fullscreen API includes requestFullscreen() to enter fullscreen and document.exitFullscreen() to leave it. This is a distinction between the page and the browser window, not a user-facing setting for permanently blocking all websites.

Exit Chrome’s fullscreen mode
Use the shortcut for your operating system. Google lists these controls in its Chrome keyboard shortcuts help.

- Windows or Linux: Press F11. Google also lists pressing and holding Esc as an exit method.
- Mac: Press Fn+f, or press and hold Esc. Keyboard behavior can vary by configuration.
- Chromebook: Use the full-screen key shown in Google’s Chromebook-specific shortcut list. Chromebook keyboards differ, so do not assume the Windows or Linux F11 instruction applies.
If the shortcut turns fullscreen on instead of off, press it again to toggle back. It changes the current state; it does not remove the ability to enter fullscreen later.
If a website or app returns to fullscreen
- Exit fullscreen using the shortcut for your device.
- If only the site’s content remains or becomes fullscreen again, look for the site or app’s own fullscreen control and avoid activating it.
- If fullscreen returns without an obvious control, consider whether a game, web app, or other site behavior is triggering it. The page’s fullscreen behavior is distinct from Chrome’s window mode.
Chrome’s general site-permissions help covers many permissions, but does not document a universal ordinary-user setting to block fullscreen across websites. Clearing site data or changing unrelated permissions should not be treated as a permanent fullscreen block. Chrome release notes describe an automatic-fullscreen content setting for enterprise administrators and note that users may also allow this feature for Isolated Web Apps through site settings; that does not establish a universal toggle for every website.

What ordinary users can and cannot change
Google’s reviewed consumer help pages document how to turn fullscreen off, but not a permanent-off setting for ordinary Chrome users. An exit shortcut is therefore the practical immediate fix, not a lasting restriction. This describes the documented consumer controls; it is not a claim that no extension or operating-system-level workaround could exist.
For an organization-managed Chrome device
An administrator can review Google’s Chrome Enterprise Fullscreen mode policy. It applies to managed ChromeOS devices and Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Google says the policy controls whether, with appropriate permissions, users, apps, and extensions can use fullscreen, and that fullscreen is allowed by default. Changing this control requires administrator access; if you do not manage the device, ask your organization’s administrator whether the policy can be changed.
