In Windows 11, turn off Do not disturb from Notification Center. In Windows 10, select Focus assist in Action Center until its status is Off. If notifications are silenced again, check the automatic rules for your Windows version.
Turn off Do not disturb in Windows 11
- Open Notification Center by selecting the clock or notification bell on the taskbar, or press Windows key + N.
- Select the bell control marked with zZ to switch Do not disturb off.
Microsoft says that while Do not disturb is on, other notifications are sent to Notification Center until you turn it off. Priority settings can also let selected calls, reminders, or apps through. See Microsoft’s Windows notification and Do not disturb guidance.

Turn off Focus assist in Windows 10
- Select the Action Center icon on the taskbar. If the Focus assist tile is not visible, select Expand.
- Select Focus assist until the status reads Off. The control cycles through Priority only, Alarms only, and Off; Off allows all notifications through the Focus assist filter.
For Microsoft’s instructions, see Make it easier to focus on tasks. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; that does not prevent changing this setting.

Stop the setting from turning on again
Windows 11 automatic conditions
Open Settings > System > Notifications, then expand Turn on do not disturb automatically. Review any enabled conditions, which can include scheduled hours, display duplication, gaming, full-screen apps, and a period after a Windows feature update. Disable the condition that is causing the unwanted silencing rather than turning off unrelated rules.

A Windows 11 Focus session turns on Do not disturb. If Do not disturb was already on before the session began, it remains on after the session ends. Check the session and the automatic conditions if the bell control keeps returning to on. See Microsoft’s guidance on Focus sessions.
Windows 10 automatic rules
Open Start > Settings > System > Focus assist and inspect Automatic rules. Turn off the rule responsible for switching Focus assist on.

If notifications are still missing
Turning off Do not disturb or Focus assist does not override the main Windows notifications switch or an app’s individual permission. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Notifications, make sure notifications are enabled, and check the app under Notifications from apps and other senders. For Outlook, check both Windows notification settings and Outlook’s own notification setting; Microsoft lists both in its Outlook notification troubleshooting guidance.
