That setting controls data; it is not a guaranteed block on roaming calls, texts, or every possible charge. If you want to prevent all roaming service on a line, ask your carrier what it can block and how your plan bills roaming.
Turn off data roaming on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings, then tap Cellular or Cellular Data. The label can vary by region.
- If you use Dual SIM or Dual eSIM, tap the number you want to change.
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Turn off Data Roaming. Apple describes this setting as allowing internet access over a cellular network outside your carrier’s coverage. Apple’s roaming guidance also notes that some plans include roaming without extra fees, so check your own plan rather than assuming every roaming connection costs extra.
Apple documents Voice Roaming separately on some CDMA configurations. Available options depend on iPhone model, carrier, and region. Turning off Cellular Data more broadly makes data services use Wi-Fi only, but it does not by itself establish that voice or messaging roaming is blocked. Turn off data roaming on Android
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then Mobile networks.
- Turn off Data roaming.
Samsung notes that menu names and layouts can vary by model, software, region, or carrier. Its roaming support guidance advises checking with your network provider about charges and travel details.
Other Android phones
Try searching Settings for “roaming,” or look under mobile network or SIM settings. This is a navigation hint, not a universal path: labels and locations vary across Android versions and manufacturers. If more than one SIM is installed, confirm that you are changing the setting for the intended line.

What turning off Data Roaming does—and does not do
Data Roaming restricts cellular internet access while your phone is connected to a network outside your carrier’s coverage. It should not be treated as a switch that blocks every kind of roaming. Apple documents data roaming separately from an optional voice-roaming control, while Xfinity Mobile documents an account-level option to enable or disable roaming service for voice and data.
If you want a broader block, contact your carrier and ask it to disable roaming on the line. Ask exactly which services are restricted and what events can still incur charges under your plan. The available guidance does not establish universal billing rules for incoming or unanswered calls, voicemail, SMS or MMS, or Wi-Fi Calling; those details depend on the carrier and plan.

Choose the right control for your situation

Check the active line when using Dual SIM or an eSIM
On iPhone, Apple’s steps require selecting the relevant number before changing Data Roaming, so the setting applies to the intended line. If a travel eSIM supplies data while your home SIM remains installed, check which line is selected for cellular data and review the home line’s roaming setting. The two lines have separate settings and may have different coverage and billing terms.
Before traveling, confirm with each provider which line will carry data, whether roaming is included, and what services remain active when Data Roaming is off. If avoiding all roaming charges is essential, get the carrier’s exact restrictions and billing rules for your line.
