How to Turn Off Autoplay and Set Up Parental Controls on Streaming Apps

Autoplay controls and parental restrictions are separate. Here’s where to change them on YouTube, Netflix and Disney+, plus what to verify in Prime Video.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop autoplay and make streaming safer for a child, change two separate kinds of settings: turn off previews or automatic next-video playback, then apply age or content restrictions to the child’s profile. The controls differ by service and may also vary by device, so check each profile and device the child uses.

Before you change settings: identify what autoplay means

Autoplay can refer to previews that start while browsing, the next episode in a series, or a related video after the current one. These are distinct behaviors, and a service may offer separate switches for them. Disabling autoplay does not block mature content; use the service’s profile, age-rating, or child-account controls for that.

Whenever possible, use a child or supervised profile rather than sharing an adult profile. Some settings are tied to a profile, while YouTube explicitly notes that autoplay preferences can differ by device. Check the relevant profile on each phone, computer, and TV.

YouTube: turn off autoplay and supervise a child account

Turn autoplay off for an individual viewer

In the YouTube player, switch Autoplay off. On Android or iOS, you can also open Settings → Autoplay. In the YouTube TV app, open Settings and choose Autoplay. The setting may differ between devices, so confirm it on each one. If the next video is about to start, you can cancel it at the end of the current video as a temporary measure. See YouTube’s autoplay instructions.

Disable autoplay for a supervised child account

Using the linked parent account, open YouTube Family Center, select the child’s profile, and switch on Disable autoplay. You can also manage the setting through Family Link: select the child, then open Controls → Content restrictions → YouTube. When a parent disables autoplay for a supervised account, YouTube says the child cannot turn it back on. See YouTube’s supervised experience settings.

Do not confuse YouTube Kids with supervised YouTube

YouTube Kids has separate profile controls for content level, search, history, and other options. Its autoplay setting may remain under the child’s control unless a parent turns it off. A YouTube Kids profile and a supervised account in the regular YouTube app are different setups; manage the one the child actually uses. See YouTube Kids parental controls.

On the Netflix mobile app

  1. Open My Netflix.
  2. Tap the profile name, then choose Manage Profiles.
  3. Select the profile to change and switch off the relevant autoplay option or options.

On the web

  1. Open Account.
  2. Under Profiles, choose the profile.
  3. Open Playback settings and switch off the relevant autoplay option or options.

Netflix says changes update automatically, but a device may need a profile switch or a sign-out and sign-in before the change appears. Some older TVs and streaming devices do not support preview autoplay. For content limits, use the profile’s maturity settings and other parental controls separately from autoplay. See Netflix’s autoplay settings instructions and Netflix parental controls.

Disney+: edit autoplay and profile protections

Disney+ lets you disable autoplay while editing a profile. Its parental-control options include profile content ratings, Junior Mode, profile PINs, restrictions on creating profiles, and a setting for unrated or live content. Manage these controls in a supported web browser or the mobile app.

Disney+ says content above a profile’s rating is hidden while browsing and searching. Profile settings do not necessarily affect promotions, so do not treat a rating limit as a guarantee that all promotional material will be filtered. Disney+ describes its approach this way: “Disney+ offers multiple parental control features for you to use with our service.” See Disney+ parental controls.

Prime Video: check the controls available in your region

Prime Video’s Account PIN is required to bypass viewing restrictions and also controls purchases or subscriptions, according to its help guidance. Ofcom’s UK review describes Prime Video as offering PIN protection for purchases and rentals, age-related viewing controls, and autoplay settings. The available evidence does not establish a universal, current click-by-click path across devices and regions, so use Prime Video’s account and device settings and verify the controls shown in your own app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set an Account PIN and review viewing restrictions and autoplay separately. A purchase PIN is not a substitute for an age-related viewing restriction. For current details, see Prime Video’s help page on account PINs and Ofcom’s UK review of streaming services and parental controls.

Quick comparison: what to check on each service

Service Autoplay controls Child or content protections Important qualification
YouTube Autoplay can be switched off in the player, app settings, or TV settings; a parent can disable it for a supervised account. Supervised account controls; YouTube Kids has separate content-level and profile settings. Preferences can differ by device. A parent’s disable-autoplay setting on a supervised account cannot be re-enabled by the child.
Netflix Separate switches for previews and next episodes, managed for a profile. Profile maturity settings and other parental controls. Some older TVs and streaming devices do not support preview autoplay; a profile refresh or sign-in may be needed for changes to appear.
Disney+ Autoplay can be disabled while editing a profile. Content ratings, Junior Mode, profile PINs, profile-creation restrictions, and an unrated/live-content setting. Manage through a supported browser or mobile app; ratings do not necessarily affect promotions.
Prime Video Autoplay settings are described in Ofcom’s UK review; a universal device-by-device path is not established. Account PIN, purchase and rental protection, and age-related viewing controls. Check the settings presented in your region and on your device; Ofcom’s description is UK-specific.

Check the result on the devices your child actually uses

  • Confirm you changed the child’s profile, not an adult profile.
  • Test previews and next-episode playback separately where both controls exist.
  • Open the service’s parental controls and set age or content restrictions independently of autoplay.
  • Check the setting on every device the child uses. YouTube explicitly warns that its autoplay preference may differ between devices.
  • If a Netflix change does not appear, switch profiles or sign out and back in, as Netflix recommends.

Exact menus and feature availability can change by app version, device, or region. This guide reflects the controls described in the linked service and regulator sources as of October 2026; where a universal path is not established, verify the labels shown in the app rather than assuming another device’s menu applies.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
