To turn off the device setting, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection, switch off Device protection, then authenticate. Account enrollment may need a separate change.
Turn off Device protection on your Android phone
- Open Settings.
- Go to Security & Privacy > Other settings > Advanced Protection. Alternatively, open Google settings > All services > Personal and device safety > Advanced Protection.
- Under Advanced Protection, turn off Device protection.
- Confirm with your biometrics or device PIN. If prompted because your Google Account is enrolled in Account protection, tap Continue before authenticating.
- Restart the phone if prompted; Google says a reboot may be needed to revert some security settings.
These are Google’s documented routes, but menu wording can vary by manufacturer and Android version. If neither path appears, search Settings for “Advanced Protection.” See Google’s Android instructions for Advanced Protection.

Check whether Google Account enrollment is also involved
Turning off Device protection does not necessarily remove restrictions tied to a Google Account that remains enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program. Google documents two account-level options: remove the enrolled account from the Android device, or unenroll the Google Account in its security settings. Both procedures require force-stopping Google Play Store, and Google says automatic protections may take up to 24 hours to stop afterward. Unenrolling removes the increased security for that Google Account and the Google products used with it.

Understand what may be blocked
With Device protection on, Android blocks installations from unknown sources and updates for apps originally installed from unknown sources. Google also says Play Protect cannot be turned off while Device protection is enabled.
Account enrollment has its own installation rules: most sources outside Google Play are blocked, while Google Play, Android Debug Bridge (adb), and preinstalled Android app stores are permitted. Non-Play apps already on the device are not removed and continue to receive updates. The account-level rules are described in Google Account Help.

Decide whether to bypass the block
- Verify the source. Only consider an APK from the app developer’s genuine, official source, and install it only if you trust the developer and need the app. Google warns that “Apps from unknown sources may not be vetted and can carry a higher risk of harm.” Disabling protection does not establish that a particular APK is safe.
- Consider the wider trade-off. Advanced Protection is a collection of protections, not just an APK-install permission. Google lists Play Protect scanning, restrictions on unknown apps and accessibility services, Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) for supported apps, Android Safe Browsing, Chrome HTTPS enforcement where possible, JavaScript optimizer changes, and WebGPU being turned off in Chrome. Google notes MTE can affect performance in supported apps.
- Restore protection when finished. If you turned Device protection off for a specific task, consider turning it back on afterward.
On supported phones, Device protection can also enable USB Protection. Google says USB Protection is available on Pixel 6 and later and turns on automatically when Device protection is enabled. See Google’s USB Protection guidance for details.

- If the Device protection switch is unavailable or the block persists after turning it off, check whether the Google Account is still enrolled and use the account-level option above if appropriate.
- If you unenrolled or removed the account but protections have not changed immediately, allow up to 24 hours for them to stop automatically.
- If a menu path differs, search Settings for “Advanced Protection”; the documented labels may not match every manufacturer’s interface.
- If the APK is not from a source you can verify, do not bypass the warning simply to complete the installation.
