You can reduce how often AI features appear on a new phone by declining optional setup prompts and turning off the controls that matter to you. There is no single switch that disables every AI feature: settings vary by phone, operating system, region, language, and app. Use Settings search if a label or path differs, then check that the feature is off.
Start during phone setup
1. Decline optional AI and app connections
Read setup prompts for optional AI, personalization, connected apps, or proactive assistance. Decline anything you do not want to enable; you can usually review settings later. On supported Gemini Intelligence phones, Google says you can choose “Don’t connect” when asked which apps to connect, and decide whether to turn on Proactive Assistance. Proactive Assistance can use selected on-device sources, including messages and screenshots. These options are specific to supported phones, not a universal Android setup screen. Turn down Apple Intelligence on iPhone
2. Turn off Apple Intelligence
On a supported iPhone, go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn off Apple Intelligence. Device, language, and regional eligibility affect whether the feature and its controls appear. 3. Disable summaries you do not want
If your main concern is AI-written summaries rather than every Apple Intelligence feature, review the individual controls for message, email, and notification summaries. Turn off the relevant options in Settings; their exact availability and labels can vary by iOS version and language. This lets you keep other Apple Intelligence features enabled if you prefer.

4. Restrict writing and image-generation tools with Screen Time
For a more targeted restriction, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri. Disallow Writing Tools or Image Creation to restrict those feature groups, which can include tools such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand. Apple’s Screen Time instructions
5. Disable the ChatGPT extension separately
If you do not want the ChatGPT extension available through Apple Intelligence, turn off Use ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence settings. Screen Time offers a separate restriction: go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri and disallow Intelligence Extensions for a stronger block on third-party provider extensions. Stop Gemini from opening on Android
6. Turn off “Hey Google” activation
In Gemini’s settings, turn off Hey Google if you do not want to start the assistant by voice. Google documents this alongside other Gemini controls, but the route to the setting differs by phone maker and software version. Gemini may launch from a power-button hold or another gesture, and some phones allow it to respond from the lock screen. In the phone’s settings, change the assistant or power-button gesture if you do not want that shortcut; in Gemini settings, turn off use on the lock screen. Labels and locations are manufacturer-specific. Google’s help page uses the phrase “Use Gemini without unlocking” for the lock-screen option.

8. Change the default assistant
If you want a different assistant, switch to Google Assistant or choose another option—or None—as the default digital assistant app, where your device offers those choices. Removing the Gemini app alone does not necessarily change which assistant is set as the default, so check the default-app setting as well. Google’s instructions vary by device maker. Limit what Gemini can connect to or remember
9. Review Gemini Connected Apps
In Gemini’s Connected Apps settings, disconnect services you do not want available for supported personalization features. Depending on eligibility and availability, the list can include Contacts, Google Photos, Google Wallet (US only), Google Workspace, Search services, and YouTube. Review the actual list on your device: not every service or control is available to every user. 10. Treat Personal Intelligence and saved activity as separate choices
Turning off Personal Intelligence for one Gemini chat limits personalization for that chat; it does not, by itself, stop the chat from being saved to Gemini Apps Activity. When you want to chat without saving activity to your Google Account, Google points to temporary chat. Review Gemini Apps Activity separately from Connected Apps and chat-level Personal Intelligence settings. Check the settings that match your goal
- Fewer AI activations: disable voice activation, button gestures, and lock-screen access on Android.
- Fewer generated features: turn off Apple Intelligence or restrict selected writing, image, or extension features through Screen Time on iPhone.
- Less connected personal context: decline setup connections and review Gemini Connected Apps.
- Different account activity handling: review Gemini Apps Activity and use temporary chat when you do not want a chat saved to the account.
These controls address different things: launching an assistant, using connected-app context, generating content, and personalizing or saving chats are not the same setting.
