LibreOffice does not include AI features in its standard installation, according to The Document Foundation (TDF). If you are concerned about an AI assistant processing document text, check for optional extensions and disable or remove any you do not want. Separately, choose a folder on your computer’s local drive when saving; disabling an extension does not determine where a document is stored.
Does LibreOffice have built-in AI to turn off?
TDF says LibreOffice does not include AI features out of the box. The project’s September 2026 statement describes AI as an optional extension approach, rather than a default assistant that every user must switch off. This applies to the standard application; it does not rule out extensions, administrator-installed integrations, or changes made to a particular installation. TDF spokesperson Italo Vignoli wrote, “No content may leave the computer without authorisation.” That is a statement of the project’s principle, not a technical guarantee about every third-party extension. An extension’s provider and configuration determine how it handles text.

Open Tools → Extensions. In the tabbed interface, use the Extensions command.

Review the installed items for an AI, generative-AI, or writing-assistant extension. Select an extension to inspect the available controls.

Choose Disable to leave it installed but inactive, or Remove to uninstall it. Restart LibreOffice if the extension or its instructions require it.

LibreOffice’s Extension Manager help documents enabling, disabling, removing, and updating extensions. Controls may be unavailable for bundled extensions or ones installed for all users; administrator access may be needed to change system-wide items.
How to tell whether an extension processes text locally or remotely
Finding an extension does not, by itself, tell you where it sends text. Check that extension’s documentation and provider settings before using it with sensitive content. Do not assume that every LibreOffice AI extension offers both local and remote processing.

TDF’s January 2025 article describes localwriter, an optional Writer extension that uses local inference through Ollama or text-generation-webui. This is an example of one extension, not a claim about all extensions: TDF’s localwriter article.

A separate extension’s documentation says selected text goes to local Ollama when configured that way, or to the OpenAI API when its remote provider is selected. Those details are specific to that extension and configuration: AI Assistant for Writer documentation.

If you want to avoid sending text to an AI service, disable or remove the relevant extension. If you keep it, verify the selected provider and the extension’s current data-handling behavior before sending it any text.
How to save a document only to a local drive

Choose File → Save As.

Select a folder on the computer’s local drive and save the document.

Check the destination path shown in the dialog. For local-only storage, do not choose a network share or a cloud-synced folder.
LibreOffice supports saving to local data media, network drives, and internet locations; the application cannot determine whether another service on your computer will sync or back up the chosen folder. Its Saving Documents help explains the available destination types. Also consider whether backup software or other system services copy the file.
What metadata removal does—and does not do
If you also want to remove personal details from document properties, comments, or tracked changes, open Tools → Options (called Preferences on macOS), then go to LibreOffice → Security → Security Options and Warnings. Enable Remove personal information on saving. Menu labels can vary by platform and release. LibreOffice says this option removes user data from file properties, comments, and tracked changes and replaces author names in comments and changes with generic values. It does not disable AI or control the document’s save location. See Security Options and Warnings.

Choosing a local folder for the main document does not establish that no other copies exist. LibreOffice’s Paths settings identify locations for temporary files and backup copies in the user profile. For sensitive work, review those paths as well as the main save destination. The Paths help describes these categories; it does not promise that changing the document’s save folder removes temporary or backup copies.
