Turning off Active Status stops Messenger from showing your online presence in that app, but it does not guarantee that nobody can see when you were recently active. Activity can still show from other places where you use Facebook or Messenger, so you need to switch the setting off wherever you use each service.
Turn off Active Status in Messenger on mobile
The most detailed procedure available for this setting is for the Messenger mobile app. A guide from India Today, published July 13, 2020, describes the following route on both Android and iOS. Because that guide is several years old, treat the labels and icon positions as a starting point and look for the matching option if your screens differ.

- Open the Messenger app.
- Go to the Chats tab.
- Tap your profile picture in the upper-left corner.
- Tap Active Status.
- Switch the Active Status control off.
- Confirm by tapping Turn Off.
After you complete these steps, Messenger should stop showing you as active in that app. If the option does not appear where the guide describes, check the profile or settings menu for an entry labeled Active Status before assuming the feature has been removed.
Why one toggle may not be enough
The same guide warns that turning Active Status off does not fully hide recent activity. In its words, when Active Status is off, you will still appear active or recently active from any other places where you use Facebook or Messenger, unless you turn off Active Status in those places too. The practical implication is that a setting changed in the Messenger app does not automatically cover the Facebook app or a web browser.

Before you assume you are hidden, list every place you use the service:
- The Messenger app on your phone or tablet
- The Facebook app on your phone or tablet
- Facebook in a desktop or mobile web browser
- Any other device signed in to your account
Then repeat the Active Status check in each location.

Turn off Active Status in Facebook
The current Facebook steps are the weakest part of this guide. Meta’s general messaging help pages were located, but no current Meta article with exact Active Status instructions for Facebook mobile or desktop was confirmed. Menu names and positions on Facebook change often, so do not rely on a specific path from older pages.
To find the setting in Facebook, open your account settings and search for the option labeled Active Status. If it is not in the settings menu, check the messaging or chat settings in the same account area. Once you find it, switch it off and confirm the change.

The available sources do not establish whether this setting can be managed separately for individual contacts, or exactly how it syncs between Facebook and Messenger. If you need to hide activity from one person in particular, check the current Facebook help center for that specific control rather than assuming it exists.

- Confirm that the Messenger toggle reads off on every phone and tablet where you use Messenger.
- Repeat the check in the Facebook app and in each browser where you sign in.
- Sign out and back in on a second device to confirm that the change applies there too.
- If a menu label does not match this guide, search your app’s settings for “Active Status” rather than following old screenshots.
No single source confirms how quickly a change takes effect across all apps, so allow some time and recheck any location that still appears to show you as active.
