If Bixby Voice is already set up and available, press and hold the Side button and say “Turn off the phone.” If Bixby asks you to confirm, answer aloud. Samsung documents this as a way to shut down without selecting an on-screen menu. If Bixby is unavailable and the touchscreen does not work, Samsung’s button combinations do not provide a universal normal shutdown: they open a menu that still needs input, or restart a frozen phone.

Samsung’s button names and behavior vary by Galaxy model, software version, carrier, and region. Many newer models use a Side button for power and Bixby functions; some older models have a dedicated Power button.

Shut down with Bixby Voice
- Press and hold the Side button to activate Bixby, if that action is enabled on your phone.
- Say “Turn off the phone.”
- If Bixby requests confirmation, confirm by voice.
This works only if Bixby Voice was set up and is available on your device, language, and region. Samsung’s Australia instructions describe voice confirmation; behavior can vary by model and regional variant. See Samsung’s Galaxy power on/off guide and its Australia-specific instructions.

On many Galaxy phones, holding Side and Volume down for a few seconds opens the power menu. You then have to tap Power off and tap it again to confirm. A phone with a dedicated Power button may open the menu when you hold that button instead. The Quick Settings Power icon also requires on-screen selection. These are menu shortcuts, not touch-free shutdown methods.

Some supported models let you change what a long press of the Side button does, such as opening the Power off menu instead of Bixby. Samsung’s documented setting requires navigating Settings on screen, so it generally cannot help when touch input has already failed. Button configuration details are model-dependent; see Samsung Canada’s Side button guidance and Samsung US’s instructions for changing the Bixby long-press action.
If the phone is frozen, force a reboot—not a shutdown
If the phone is unresponsive, press and hold Side/Power and Volume down together. Samsung describes this as a forced restart that simulates removing the battery; it does not leave the device powered off. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance says the restart may take up to 60 seconds. After it restarts, a phone secured with biometrics may require its backup PIN or password.

If neither voice nor touch input is available
Samsung’s documented normal shutdown paths do not establish a universal way to turn off every Galaxy phone when the touchscreen is completely unusable and Bixby Voice cannot be used. The forced button combination is a reboot, not a final power-off. If the phone remains uncontrollable after the documented recovery steps, Samsung advises requesting service.
