To turn off a Samsung Galaxy S24, press and hold the Side and Volume down buttons together until the power menu appears. Tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm. Samsung documents this button shortcut for newer Galaxy phones. Samsung Support: Power your Galaxy phone or tablet on or off.
Turn off the Galaxy S24 with its buttons
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume down button at the same time for a few seconds, until the power menu appears.
- Tap Power off.
- Tap Power off again to confirm.
This is the ordinary menu-based shutdown method. Samsung’s instructions specify the Side and Volume down buttons pressed simultaneously. Samsung Support.

Use Quick settings instead
- Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick settings.
- Tap the Power icon near Settings.
- Tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm.
This on-screen route opens the same power menu without using the button shortcut. Samsung Support.
Why holding the Side button alone may not work
On newer Galaxy phones, the Side button combines functions previously handled by separate Power and Bixby controls. Depending on its configuration, holding Side alone may launch Bixby or another digital assistant instead of opening the power menu. Samsung identifies Quick settings and Side plus Volume down as alternatives. Samsung Support: Unable to power off Galaxy phones without a Power key; Samsung UK Support: Side button settings.

A long hold of Side and Volume down is a forced recovery action, not the normal shutdown sequence. Samsung says to hold the buttons together until the device shuts down or restarts; this can take up to 60 seconds. Samsung Support: Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet will not turn off.
