To turn off a Samsung Galaxy S23, press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button together until the power menu appears. Tap Power off, then tap it again to confirm.
Turn off the Galaxy S23 with its buttons
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button at the same time until the power menu appears.
- Tap Power off.
- Tap Power off a second time to confirm shutdown.

Turn it off from the screen instead
Open the notification panel and tap the power icon, then choose Power off and confirm. Samsung’s support directions describe opening Quick Settings with a two-finger downward swipe before tapping the power icon; the exact panel layout may vary with software version or configuration. If holding the Side button opens Bixby
The Side button’s press-and-hold action can be changed. On the S23, open Settings → Advanced features → Side button, then select Power off menu for the press-and-hold setting. Menu labels or availability can differ by software version, carrier, model, or configuration.

If the Galaxy S23 is frozen
If the phone is unresponsive, press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button together for more than 7 seconds to force a restart. This restarts the device; it is not the normal shutdown procedure.
