How do I turn off my Samsung S20 Ultra?
Use the buttons
- Press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button together for a few seconds, until the power menu appears.
- Tap Power off.
- Tap Power off again to confirm. Samsung’s Galaxy phone power instructions describe this normal shutdown method.
Use Quick Settings
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap the Power icon, shown in the upper-right area of the panel.
- Tap Power off, then confirm by tapping Power off again.
This screen-based method is useful if you would rather not use the buttons. The exact panel layout can vary by model and software version.

Why does holding the power button open Bixby?
On Galaxy phones, the Side button’s press-and-hold action can be set to launch Bixby rather than show the power menu. Samsung’s Side Key settings guidance gives the general setting path: Settings → Advanced features → Side button or Side key. If your software offers it, change the press-and-hold action to Power off menu. Menu names and availability can differ between software versions.

You do not need to change that setting to shut down: use Side + Volume Down or the Quick Settings Power icon.

How do I turn off my Galaxy if the screen is frozen?
If the phone is unresponsive, press and hold Side/Power + Volume Down to force a restart. Samsung support instructions vary: one says about 10 seconds, another says more than 7 seconds, and another says to keep holding until the device shuts down, which can take up to 60 seconds. Release the buttons when the phone restarts.
This is not the normal menu-based shutdown: it restarts the phone rather than leaving it powered off. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for an unresponsive Galaxy describes the button restart procedure. The exact timing is not universal.

What if Maintenance Boot Mode appears or the phone still will not respond?
If Maintenance Boot Mode appears, use the volume buttons to highlight Normal Boot, then select it with the Power or Bixby button. Samsung explains this recovery step in its Galaxy device troubleshooting instructions.
If the device remains unresponsive after the supported recovery steps, contact Samsung service for assistance.

Why might the steps look different?
Samsung’s guidance covers Galaxy phones generally; the consulted support pages do not document every S20 Ultra screen variation. Menu labels, setting availability, and Quick Settings layout can vary by model, software version, carrier, and region. Samsung Canada also notes that its instructions apply to devices sold in Canada.
