Change the setting in Spotify for desktop

Open the Spotify desktop app and select your profile menu, then choose Settings.

Find Enable hardware acceleration. Switch it off to disable the feature, or on to enable it.

Spotify’s desktop lag FAQ documents this path for turning the setting off. The on/off control is the corresponding way to enable it if it appears in your installed app. Spotify’s instructions cover the desktop app; they do not establish an equivalent control in the mobile apps.

Should hardware acceleration be on or off?
There is no universally best setting established by Spotify’s guidance. Spotify lists switching it off as one troubleshooting step for lag when the desktop app is in the foreground—not as a guaranteed fix. If you are not troubleshooting a problem, the FAQ does not recommend a preferred setting for every computer.
If Spotify lags while you are using it
Turn the setting off and see whether the behavior improves. Spotify’s FAQ does not specify that the app must be restarted after changing it; follow any restart prompt shown by your version. If lag continues, Spotify suggests checking for device software updates, especially graphics-related updates, and reinstalling Spotify if needed.

If you want to restore the feature
Return to Settings > Compatibility and switch Enable hardware acceleration on, if that control is available in your desktop app.

Check the installed desktop app’s Compatibility section. Spotify’s interface can change, and the cited instructions do not confirm the control’s location in every version or platform.

Check for operating-system and graphics-related software updates, then consider reinstalling Spotify if the problem persists, as described in Spotify’s lag troubleshooting guidance.

If you need another way to listen while diagnosing the desktop app, try Spotify’s web player. Spotify lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari as supported desktop browser families. Using the web player is an alternative listening route; Spotify does not say it changes the desktop app’s hardware acceleration setting.

Hardware acceleration is not Exclusive Mode
Spotify’s hardware acceleration control is in Compatibility. Exclusive Mode is a separate Windows desktop audio-output feature for Premium users, documented under Settings > Playback for a compatible selected audio device. It concerns access to an audio device, not the Compatibility setting.
